Note 1: It comes from the verses of Hui Neng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism. The details of this Zen koan are as follows -
Shaozhou Fahai, a famous Zen master in the Tang Dynasty and a disciple of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. When Zen Master Fahai from Shaozhou first met the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, he asked after worshiping: "Master, please explain to me that the mind is the Buddha?" The mind that is immortal is the Buddha. The mind that is free from all appearances is the Buddha. If I continue to say this, I will never be able to finish it: The mind is called wisdom, and the Buddha is the concentration of concentration. , the mind is pure. Understand this method, use the original non-born, dual cultivation is correct. After listening to this verse, Fahai understood what "the heart is the Buddha" and understood the dual cultivation of concentration and wisdom pointed out by Huineng. The way to get started. Then he became a disciple of Huineng and practiced meditation. Later he also wrote a verse of praise: "The mind is the Buddha. I know the cause of concentration and wisdom, and Huineng is here to separate from all things." The saying "that is, the mind is the Buddha" means that students can understand their own original mind and achieve the Buddha's principles through experience. The dual cultivation of concentration and wisdom is the view of the integration of concentration and wisdom advocated by Huineng, who believes that concentration is the body of wisdom. , Wisdom is the use of concentration, this is Huineng’s Zen method.
