EliasCanetti (1905-) is an English writer who writes in German. He was born in Lushuk, a port city in northern Bulgaria, on July 25th, 1905. My father is an Austrian Jewish businessman and my mother is a Spanish Jew. 19 1 1 year, 6-year-old Canetti went to Manchester, England with her parents. 19 13 years, after his father died, his mother moved him and his two younger brothers to Vienna. He studied primary and secondary schools in Zurich and Frankfurt successively, entered the University of Vienna to study chemistry in 1924, and received his doctorate in 1929. Elias canetti was born in Rustchuk on the south bank of the Danube, which is now Lu Ze. His family is descended from Spanish Jews from Spain in 1492, so besides Bulgarian, Canetti can also speak old Spanish-Ladino (an abandoned dialect). Later, Canetti moved to Manchester, England, but his father died in 19 12, so Canetti moved to Vienna with his mother and began to learn German. Later, his mother forced Canetti to communicate in German on weekdays, and he also wrote in German in the future. 1924 to 1938, settled in Vienna and occasionally went to Berlin. During this period, he also devoted himself to the study of history and literature, met Kafka, Babel, Brecht and other famous writers and artists, and began to engage in literary translation and creation. Canetti studied chemistry at the University of Vienna from 65438 to 0924, and received his doctorate in chemistry from 65438 to 0929. But during this period, he found himself more enthusiastic about art, literature and philosophy, so he never became a chemist again, but began to write, and completed the Young Roman Consul and a poem and drama.
1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria, and Canetti lived in exile in France for one year, then settled in London, England, and obtained British citizenship.
After visiting Berlin and meeting with some artists, Canetti began to write a series of novels about human fanaticism, such as DieBlendung in 1935, which was inspired by the madness when mobs burned the Vienna Palace of Justice in 1920. This book was greatly appreciated by Nobel Prize in Literature laureate paul thomas mann (1929) and British philosopher and novelist Iris Murdoch. In 1930s, Canetti also wrote two plays: DieHochzeit and DerEitelkeit. Soon, American writer UptonSinclair began to translate his works.
1938, Nazi invaded Austria, and Canetti, a Jew, fled to Paris. The next year, he immigrated to London and settled there. After that, he spent most of his time in England, where he mainly published his works in English, so some works were published in English first and then translated into German by him.
However, his novels were censored by the Nazis until the 1960s. So Canetti is still an unknown writer.
In postwar England, Canetti stopped his literary creation and began to write a collection of essays, People and Power. Canetti lives in Zurich. 198 1 won the nobel prize for "his works have broad vision and rich ideological and artistic strength". 1On August 4th, 994, Canetti passed away.
Canetti has been writing in German all his life. As early as 1935, he published the famous novel Lost. Through the tragedy of Peter Keane, a bookworm sinologist, he shows the social reality that human nature is lost, morality is ruined and spirit is destroyed by greed. He uses grotesque techniques and all kinds of deformed characters to express the alienated world. 1932, Canetti published his first play, The Wedding. Since then, comedies such as Vanity (1950) and People Who Decide to Die (1956) have been published. These plays are absurd, with no leading role and no plot. They just show some scenes and states, exposing and satirizing some abnormal psychology and ugly behaviors of the society at that time.
