Whitman was also a teacher, a journalist, and for three years during the American Civil War, he was a noted volunteer nurse. In 1862, while serving in the Union Army, he saw his brother George wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg and went to visit and care for the wounded soldier. Whitman estimated that he visited 600 hospitals during this time and visited 100,000 wounded Union and Allied soldiers.
