"Self-discipline", discipline is etiquette. Only by observing etiquette can learners have a heart for Tao, and the heart for Tao must be sincere, so that they will have the motivation to learn, so as to achieve "being knowledgeable and enjoying learning" and "never tire of learning". The term "self-discipline" means that Confucius attaches great importance to virtue in teaching, and Confucius will admonish those who can actively observe etiquette and study diligently.
