Gao Kun, a native of Jinshan County, Jiangsu Province (now Jinshan District, Shanghai), is a Chinese physicist, educator, expert in optical fiber communication and electrical engineering, former president of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a foreign academician of China Academy of Sciences. With British and American citizenship and Hong Kong resident status in China, he is known as "the father of optical fiber", "the father of optical fiber communication" and "the godfather of broadband". Gao Kun 1949 moved to hongkong, 1954 went to England to study electrical engineering, 1957 and 1965 obtained bachelor's and doctor's degrees from University College London.

However, since there was no department of electrical engineering in HKU at that time, he went to woolwich Institute of Technology in east London (now university of greenwich, England) to study. 1957, Gao Kun graduated from woolwich institute of technology majoring in electronic engineering; In the same year, Gao Kun joined ITT as a doctor and worked as an engineer in its British subsidiary, Standard Telephone and Telegraph Co., Ltd.
From 65438 to 0960, Gao Kun entered ITT's China-Europe Institute-Standard Telecom Experiment Co., Ltd., where he worked for ten years, and his position was promoted from research scientist to research manager. From 65438 to 0965, Gao Kun received a doctorate in electronic engineering from University College London.
From 1970 to 1974, Gao Kun became the newly established professor and head of the Department of Electronics of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and later became the first chair professor of the department.
