What are greed, anger and ignorance?
Greed, anger, and ignorance are the three poisons, also known as the three stains and the three fires. These three poisons harm the body and mind, causing people to sink into the cycle of life and death. They are the root of evil, so they are also called the three unwholesome roots.
Greed is excessive paranoia about preferences; it refers to the psychological activities that are stained by the five desires such as color, sound, smell, taste, touch, etc., Volume 5 of "Mahayana Yi Zhang" says: " "Love that is stained by the five external desires is called greed." This is what it means. Buddhism believes that living beings live in the world and are in contact with the outside world through their eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and other organs, which produce feelings such as color, sound, fragrance, taste, touch and so on. These feelings can arouse the desires of all living beings, so they are called the five desires. If you are attached to these five desires and develop a love-tainted mind, it will become greed. Therefore, greed and love are of the same substance and have different names.
Angry is excessive paranoia about dislikes; it is also called anger, anger, etc., which refers to hatred, resentment and the mentality of harming others. "The Theory of the Five Aggregates of the Mahayana" says: "What is anger? It means doing harm to sentient beings and pleasures." "The Theory of Consciousness-only Theory" says: "Aversion is the nature of hatred for suffering and suffering. Anger is one of the fundamental afflictions in Buddhism and is called the "three poisons" along with greed and ignorance.
Insanity is the basic ignorance of the truth of things and the reaction of greed or anger; it is also called ignorance. Refers to the dark mind and ignorance. "Kusha Lun" says: "The so-called foolishness is ignorance." Buddhism believes that all living beings have ignorant minds and are confused by things due to the ignorance they have had since time immemorial, and thus have "people" , "I". As a result, self-grasping and Dharma-grasping arise, and all kinds of troubles in life and the disturbances in worldly affairs arise from this. Therefore delusion is the basis of all defilements. Volume 6 of "Consciousness-Only Theory" says: "Being confused about the nature of things can hinder non-delusion, and all impure defilements are based on the karma." It also says: "All troubles must be caused by delusion."
Why does "greed, anger, and ignorance" occur?
Buddhism looks at the world based on dependent origination, which tells us that every thought and emotion neither comes out of nothing nor is static, but is formed under the guidance of specific causes and concepts. Once we have thoughts, we cannot control them. This is the shortcoming of us mortals. Just like when we are greedy for someone or something, once we are greedy, we always think, why can't I get it? Why doesn't he belong to me? Some people can let go clearly, but some people will be swallowed up by greed, which will eventually lead to catastrophe.
Greed is like this, and the rules of operation of all mental behaviors are like this. When we feel angry towards someone and repeatedly think about his bad qualities, our anger will quickly expand. When we become attached to ourselves and think about our own strengths all the time, our arrogance will grow. We might as well observe, what kind of psychology does not arise and develop under relevant causes and conditions?
As ordinary people, our thoughts are often closely related to greed, anger, and ignorance. In fact, this is the reason why we become ordinary people and why we go through life and death. Therefore, Buddhism calls it the three poisons, which are three viruses that harm spiritual health. The delusion in it is ignorance, which is also the source of all problems.
Ignorance is the darkness of the soul, unable to see one's true face and the hidden nature of enlightenment. Because you can't see clearly, you will have wrong assumptions about yourself and regard things that are not "me" as substitutes for yourself - such as body, appearance, status, and identity. We have fully accepted this substitution and never had any doubts. For many people, if even this body that we are born with cannot represent "I", I am afraid it is an almost absurd point of view, and it is far beyond our understanding and tolerance.
We live in society, and we have various desires every second and every moment, and we persistently have thoughts that we should not have. But in fact, everything we establish as "I", the identity, status, and wealth we possess, these are temporary labels and cannot represent ourselves forever. But we have become accustomed to these existences, so we hope that these nihilistic labels will become eternal. We hope that our bodies will always be healthy, that our status will always be stable, and that we will have more and more wealth. It seems that only in this way can we be content in the world.
However, God does not fulfill his wishes. The reality is that the body will get sick, status will disappear, and wealth will be lost. Many people die every day. A natural disaster can kill thousands of people. Thousands of human lives. These all impact our hearts, so we pray for eternity and stable things, but what things are eternal? These questions are enough to make us anxious and give rise to thoughts of greed, anger and delusion.
All negative emotions come from greed, anger and delusion. Under the bombardment of these emotions, we become increasingly unhappy. When we see others living well, we cannot bless them naturally; when we see what we cannot get, we blame ourselves and our families; we want more and more, but get less and less. The less happy.
So, Buddhism emphasizes letting go. Once we let go of our greed, anger and obsession, we will become more and more relaxed, and finally look at our old selves with a smile and lament our stupidity.
How to get rid of "greed, anger, and ignorance"?
To get rid of greed, you must use the word "giving up".
The reason why people suffer from greed is that they do everything for their own sake and are unwilling to benefit others.
All the lovely things in the world can only be attributed to ourselves. We don’t care about other people’s happiness, talk about other people’s happiness, and have nothing to do with other people’s life and death. Therefore, the disease of greed entangles us. If you understand "giving" at this time, and always happily give away your own happiness, comfort, and interests to others when you see others suffering spiritual or material suffering, then of course the serious disease of greed will not arise.
However, when it comes to "giving up", many people always think that they can do it, such as giving gifts to others and helping others relieve some pain. This cannot be regarded as true "giving up". Because giving gifts to others and helping others relieve their pain, it is inevitable that there is a little bit of hope for reward in the heart; "hope for reward" is still called "greed", not "giving up".
True equanimity is like a candle. Although you sacrifice yourself, it is enough as long as others get light; The power of love nourishes the growth of all things; true equanimity is more like the light and heat of the sun. The light and heat of the sun caress the earth without conditions or costs. He does not expect all things to repay him, and feels that this is his obligation. .
Buddhist scriptures say: "I hope all sentient beings can be freed from suffering and do not seek happiness for themselves." This is what it means.
The key to getting rid of anger is the word "forbearance".
The reason why people suffer from this disease of anger in life is that they have no self-cultivation. When faced with the adversity of not loving each other, if the anger moves, friends for many years can become enemies, and couples who have been married may become enemies. . At this time, everything around me seemed to be laughing at myself, everything was abominable, and I wanted to smash the world with one punch! If you can understand "forbearance" at this time and understand that everything in the world is equal to oneself and others, there is no difference between you, me and others, there is no difference between bad and good, with this kind of tolerance, the serious disease of anger will certainly not be easy to arise. .
In fact, can all the unloving things and all the difficult-to-solve problems in the world be solved by generating anger? That is impossible. Anger will only increase the seriousness of the situation. Therefore, you must think carefully about everything and avoid unnecessary anger. The Buddha said: "If you fight to stop fighting, you will never stop it; you can only endure it." It can stop fighting." This is really a wise saying!
However, when it comes to being able to endure it, it is indeed not easy. We can look at the structure of the word "endurance". Above "endurance" is a knife, with a dot added to the knife to form a blade. The edge is a sharp edge. A heart is written below the word "endurance", which is "endurance". This That is to say, if a very fast knife is inserted into your heart, you can be called tolerant if you can not scream or move even a moment!
The key to getting rid of dementia is the word "jue".
The reason why people suffer from this disease in life is completely because they are confused and unaware of it. The two serious diseases of greed and anger mentioned earlier are so severe, in the final analysis, they are due to ignorance. The 84,000 troubles in life, life and death, all originate from this word "madness". This "ignorance" can increase wrong views, and wrong views can create all sinful karma and lead to the bitter consequences of being a beast in hell in the future. If you have a little enlightened mind and understand that you have a great sea of ??wisdom, try to maintain a calm sea and don't let the wind of ignorance set off terrifying waves.
The sea of ??suffering is boundless, but turning back is the end. The vast future has no boundaries. In this world, it is really dangerous to lose the voyage and route without a conscious mind to look back!
So I would like to advise you: Come and believe in Buddhism as soon as possible, understand the principles you don’t understand, abandon some wrong knowledge and views that you think you understand but actually don’t understand, and abandon some things in life. If you try your best to eliminate and cure serious illnesses and some habits, that is the true enlightenment and liberation.
The antidote to the disease of greed is equanimity. When you cannot fully achieve equanimity, you should always practice contentment. Only by being content can you always be happy;
The antidote to the disease of anger is patience. , when practicing tolerance, you should practice compassion, compassion can bring joy, and compassion can relieve suffering. Only by being compassionate can you be able to endure. Only by being able to endure can you be at peace;
The treatment for dementia is When seeking enlightenment, don’t forget to increase your own wisdom. Only with wisdom can you realize that what is right now is not what yesterday was.
