In the "Book of Changes" it is mentioned that "when the moon is full, it will lose money, and when the water is full, it will overflow." It warns us that we must have a certain degree of conduct in life and work, not to be greedy for too much, not to go too far, to stop in moderation, and to maintain moderation, which is the best way to live in the world.
Zeng Guofan, a famous official in the late Qing Dynasty, also knew this truth well. When he was young, he could be said to be a very "excellent" person. He was sharp-edged, outspoken, and had a bad temper. I hit a wall, suddenly woke up in middle age, and decided to change my past mistakes, so I wrote these four sentences to encourage myself:
Those who are too impatient will not have the sense of perseverance;
There is too much fear. Those who are too talkative will not have outstanding views;
Those who are too eager will not be generous;
Those who talk too much will not have a sincere heart.
Being impatient, fearful, lustful, talkative, and brave are all the actions of a reckless man. Only by abstaining from these four points can you hope to turn disaster into good and become a master
Those who are impatient will not have the knowledge of perseverance
People who are impatient and lack stability will definitely not have mature and profound insights.
When people are angry, they lack rationality and can only see the gains and losses in front of them. Their behavior is completely controlled by their emotions, and they are often prone to doing extraordinary things, and the gains outweigh the losses.
Zhang Fei during the Three Kingdoms period was brave and good at fighting, but he was indeed an impatient man. After learning that his sworn brother Guan Yu was defeated in Maicheng, he was so angry that he cried day and night and shed tears of blood on his clothes. If a soldier makes the slightest mistake, he will be whipped and punished.
In order to avenge his sworn brother, he ordered two officers in the army to wear white flags and white armor within three days, otherwise they would be whipped to death. The two stewards knew that they would not be able to complete the arrangement within three days, and they would die sooner or later, so they became murderous towards Zhang Fei and killed him while Zhang Fei was drunk.
If Zhang Fei had been more sober and rational, considered the reality more, and tolerated his subordinates more, he would not have ended up like this.
Those who have too much fear will not have outstanding vision
Afraid means fear, fear. People who are afraid of wolves before doing things and fear of tigers later will not have outstanding vision.
Zeng Guofan once wrote a famous saying: "Things come and go, the future is not far away, the past is no longer loved, and the present is not mixed."
Be in the present and focus on the present. Sitting on this mountain and thinking about that mountain without being distracted will only make you full of worries and you will not be able to do anything well.
Those who have too many desires will not be generous.
Those who have too many desires will not be generous. They can often be bribed by giving some benefits, and they are the type of people who live on the wall.
Everyone has desires, and there is nothing wrong with that, but don’t forget your own integrity and bottom line. If you do whatever it takes to achieve your own desires, you may be successful for a while, but you will eventually fall into the quagmire.
Gongyixiu was the prime minister of the Lu State in the Spring and Autumn Period. He liked eating fish very much, so there was an endless stream of people sending fish to his door, but Gongxiu refused them all.
My friend was puzzled by this, so he asked. Gongyixiu said: Although I like to eat fish, I don’t want to accept fish from others. I am afraid that I will bear the name of favoritism and perverting the law. People are short-tongued, and maybe one day a mermaid will do something for someone, and they will be blamed and dismissed from the position of prime minister, and they will not be able to eat fish.
You must have a degree of control over your desires. You must not let your desires take over. You must maintain your integrity and principles.
Those who talk too much will have no real heart
Those who like to talk big words, talk empty words, and talk superficially must not have the spirit of seeking truth from facts.
