Lei Feng, formerly known as Lei Zhengxing, was in the army from December 18, 1940 to August 15, 1962. He was awarded second-class merit once and third-class merit three times in less than 3 years. At the age of 22, Lei Feng was born into a poor farmer's family in Jianjiatang, Wangcheng County, Changsha, Hunan Province.
