First of all, Song Renzong advocated frugality and opposed waste. In many dynasties, we can see that many kings lived a luxurious life, which also led to a bad atmosphere in the palace and a heavier tax burden on the people. Song Renzong himself is very opposed to waste. The equipment he usually uses, such as sheets, is rarely changed. When he dies, these things lose their luster and are very dim. He wants to eat mutton soup in the middle of the night, but he doesn't let the chefs in the palace cook it, because it will cause great waste and make them form such a routine.
Second, Song Renzong took advice and was generous to others. During the reign of Song Renzong, many great writers praised by later generations appeared in the Song Dynasty, such as Fan Zhongyan, Yan Shu, Sima Guang and Su Shi. Song Renzong carefully considered and adopted their suggestions, and would not blame their accusations. On one occasion, because a eunuch who combed her hair opposed the suggestion of the admonisher, Song Renzong directly drove them and some extra maids and eunuchs out of the palace.
Although Song Renzong didn't realize his ideal better in his life, he managed to make the people live and work in peace and contentment, the border was stable and the scene was peaceful, which made the Song Dynasty look quite prosperous, which was also his greatest achievement. The three kings whom Qianlong admired most were Kangxi, Emperor Taizong and Song Renzong, and Song Renzong was a real benevolent king.
