Zhuge Liang:

The conduct of a gentleman is to cultivate one’s character through tranquility, and to cultivate one’s virtue through frugality; if it is not indifferent, it will not clear its aspirations; if it is not tranquil, it will not lead to far. Learning requires tranquility, and talent requires learning; without learning, one cannot broaden one's talents, and without ambition, one cannot achieve learning. If you are lazy, you will not be able to work hard; if you are impetuous, you will not be able to cultivate your nature. The years keep pace with the times, and the thoughts go with the years, so they become withered and withered, and most of them do not survive the world. If you stay in a poor house with sorrow, what will happen to you!

The late emperor was not halfway through his business, but the middle road collapsed (cú); today, Yizhou is tired (pí) and disadvantaged, and this is the time when the survival of the sincerity is in danger. However, the ministers of the bodyguard are tireless at home, and the loyal people forget about themselves outside: it is because of the special treatment of the late emperor that I want to repay it to His Majesty. It is sincerely appropriate to open Zhang Shengting to honor the late emperor's virtues and magnify the spirit of lofty ideals; it is not appropriate to belittle oneself, use metaphors to express injustice, and block the road of loyalty and admonishment.

The palace and the mansion are all integrated; Zhi (zhì) punishment Zang (zāng) No (pǐ) should not be similar or different; if there is an adulterer and a loyal person, he should be punished and rewarded by an official , to show your majesty's plain principles; it is not appropriate to be partial and use different methods internally and externally.

If you are foolish and think that all matters in the palace are no matter how big or small, if you consult them carefully and then implement them, you will definitely be able to make up for the deficiencies and benefit a lot.

General Xiang Chong was a well-behaved person, well versed in military affairs, and was used in the past. A fool thinks that if he knows everything about the camp and consults it, he will be able to make the formation harmonious and the good and the bad will be settled.

To be close to virtuous ministers and to be far away from villains is why the Han Dynasty prospered in the past; to be close to virtuous ministers and to be distant to virtuous ministers is why the Han Dynasty has declined since then. When the late Emperor was here, every time he discussed this matter with his ministers, he would always sigh and hate Huan and Lingye. Shizhong, Shangshu, Changshi (zhǎng), and joining the army, these are the ministers who know Zhenliang's death. I hope that your majesty will love them and trust them, and the Han Dynasty will prosper. You can count the days and wait for it.

I am a commoner, working hard in Nanyang, surviving in troubled times, and not seeking to hear from the princes. Now that the south has been secured and the troops are sufficient, it is time to lead the three armies to the north to secure the central plains. The common people will be exhausted and the slaves will be blunt. The traitors will be eliminated, the Han Dynasty will be restored, and the old capital will be restored. The reason why this minister reports to the late emperor is to be loyal to His Majesty's duty. As for considering profits and losses, and giving honest advice, you, yi, and yun are left to their own devices.

May your Majesty ask your ministers to bring the thieves back to life, and if they fail to do so, you will be punished, so as to report the spirit of the late emperor. If there is no words of virtue, you, Yi, Yun, etc. will be held responsible. Slowly, to show the blame (jiù). It is also advisable for Your Majesty to make your own plans, consult Su (zōu) on good ways, listen to elegant words, and follow the late emperor's edicts deeply. I am extremely grateful!
