A touching story of SARS in 23
Zhong Nanshan, the advanced deeds of Comrade Zhong Nanshan, is an academician of China Academy of Engineering and director of Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases, the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College. He is not only an amiable, respectable, lovely and credible medical expert, but also an excellent party member. Fighting for the motherland In the eyes of others, fighting against SARS is the biggest challenge that Zhong Nanshan met in his life. But Zhong Nanshan didn't think so. He admitted that the biggest challenge he encountered was his study career when he was studying in England in his early years. In 1979, Zhong Nanshan obtained the qualification of studying abroad in public schools and went to Edinburgh University in London, England for further study. However, British law did not recognize the qualification of Dr. China, and the tutor did not trust Zhong Nanshan, so he limited his two-year study abroad to eight months. Zhong Nanshan made up his mind to fight for the motherland. He worked hard, achieved six important achievements and completed seven academic papers, four of which were published in the British Medical Research Society, Anesthesiology Society and Diabetes Society respectively. His diligence and talent have completely changed the views of foreign colleagues on Dr. China and won their respect and trust. He was awarded the titles of "Honorary Scholar" and "Honorary Member" by St. Bafflem College of University of London in the United Kingdom and the International Allergy Society of Mexico respectively. When he finished his two-year study, the University of Edinburgh and his tutor Professor Franley kept him here again and again. However, Zhong Nanshan has made up his mind to return to China to serve. He said, "My motherland sent me, and my motherland needs me. My career is in China!" Working for the Party is higher than life. In 23, SARS broke out in some parts of China, and a handful of foreign forces with ulterior motives took the opportunity to vilify China. Zhong Nanshan, as an authoritative expert on the prevention and treatment of SARS, took the opportunity of attending international academic conferences frequently to tell experts and scholars from all over the world about the SARS incident in China, the efforts and achievements made by the government and people of China. On May 28th, Zhong Nanshan was invited to give a special academic report on "The Incidence and Treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in China" at ATS. His professional, open and practical attitude and rational and restrained debate style attracted the attention of mainstream American media. The famous CNN TV station commented in USA-Today that "the incidence of SARS in Chinese mainland has dropped significantly, which is encouraging". Zhong Nanshan's efforts have, to a certain extent, broken the attempt of foreign forces to vilify China through the SARS incident, and enabled the international community to have an objective and fair understanding of the China epidemic. During that time, Zhong Nanshan not only had to treat SARS patients in the first line of clinic, but also had to coordinate the prevention and treatment work in various places, with little rest and very tired body. His wife often advised him to go out less and rest more, and even lost his temper at him for this. But Zhong Nanshan couldn't stop, because he valued his limited time serving the motherland and working for the Party more than health and life! Talking about Zhong Nanshan, Arjun, a female worker of Guangzhou Post Office, is always very emotional. She said: If I hadn't met Dean Zhong, I would have died. Eight years ago, Arjun repeatedly coughed and wheezed, but even after taking a lot of medicine, her illness became more and more serious. Later, she found Zhong Nanshan. According to Arjun's medical history and symptoms, Zhong Nanshan gave her an asthma examination, and the result was positive. Generally speaking, the diagnosis should be clear, and the rest is the right medicine. Zhong Nanshan, however, was not at ease. He continued to observe carefully for a period of time, and finally found a new problem from a subtle symptom, which was suspected to be a tracheal tumor. For the diagnosis, Zhong Nanshan personally made a bronchoscopy for her. After the illness was confirmed, Zhong Nanshan personally arranged the doctor's operation. During the operation, it was a close call. The well-hidden tumor had blocked four-fifths of the trachea. When it was full, Arjun was gone. Arjun said with deep affection: "Professor Zhong's extraordinary ability lies in his medical skills. His high sense of responsibility and love for patients are equally difficult for ordinary people." Zhong Nanshan hates the behavior of individual doctors asking for red envelopes. "The doctor's duty is to heal the wounded and rescue the dying, and there can be no discount. If you choose this profession, you must have this moral character." Everyone who works around Zhong Nanshan knows that he has a famous saying: Seeing a doctor only depends on the condition, not the background. He also has the famous "Three Ones"-Gao Qian, civilian, rich and poor, urban and rural, with the same enthusiasm and patience, the same meticulous care and the same responsibility to the end. He said so and did the same. Now, "three sameness" has become the common pursuit of medical staff in the institute. Science cannot preserve our sanity. Zhong Nanshan is a realistic and rigorous scientific worker. As early as when he was studying in Britain, he decided to carry out research on smoking and health. In order to obtain reliable information, he asked his colleagues in the Royal Hospital to inject carbon monoxide into his body, and at the same time, he kept taking blood tests. When the concentration of carbon monoxide reached 15% in the blood, colleagues all shouted: "It's too dangerous, stop it quickly!" " However, he thought that this could not meet the experimental design requirements, and he insisted on biting his teeth until the concentration of carbon monoxide in hemoglobin reached 22%. The experiment finally achieved satisfactory results, but Zhong Nanshan almost fainted. You know, this is equivalent to normal people smoking more than 6 cigarettes in a row, plus 8cc of blood. This was especially true in Zhong Nanshan in the fight against SARS in 23. He insisted on seeking truth from facts, not afraid of authority, and bravely questioned the "theory of chlamydia", which prompted the decision-makers in Guangdong Province to adhere to and strengthen the original prevention and control measures, which is also a very important reason why Guangdong Province achieved the lowest mortality rate and the highest cure rate for SARS patients. It fully shows the conscience and courage that a scientist should have. People should live in ideals. Zhong Nanshan likes a teaching from a middle school teacher: "People should not only live in reality, but also live in ideals." He often emphasizes to people around him that a person's ideals and beliefs are the most important, and they are the soul and pillar of the spirit. Since becoming a doctor, Zhong Nanshan has successively obtained more than 2 scientific research achievements at the national, provincial and municipal levels, including a third prize for national scientific and technological progress, a second prize for provincial scientific and technological progress and a third prize, and has published more than 7 papers in medical journals at home and abroad. He is one of the outstanding leaders who have promoted the scientific research and clinical cause of respiratory diseases in China to the forefront of the world in recent ten years. He and his colleagues' outstanding contributions in this major have laid a leading position in the Asia-Pacific region in the research level of some respiratory diseases in China. It is no exaggeration to describe Zhong Nanshan's achievements with "outstanding writings" and "outstanding fame". However, this 68-year-old man is still pursuing his career fervently, insisting on innovation and never stopping in the hall of science. This character also deeply infected the people around him, edified a dedicated and vigorous group, and made Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases become an academic position attracting attention in China-a national key discipline, a key laboratory in Guangdong Province, a national clinical pharmacology base and a doctoral degree awarding point. Over the years, Zhong Nanshan's spirit of "dedication, pioneering, hard work and gregarious" has been affectionately praised by comrades as "Nanshan style". On January 15th, 1997, the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee awarded him the title of "Model party member". The Health Department of Guangdong Province also wrote a special article, asking comrades in the medical front in the whole province to learn "Nanshan style". On June 19, 23, he was awarded the only special merit by the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government for his outstanding performance in anti-African combat. On April 8, 24, he was awarded the Bethune Medal, the highest honorary title of the domestic health system.
