On January 6, 1975, ABC tried to compete with NBC's The Today Show, so it produced and broadcast the program AM America. This program of ABC is co-hosted by Bill bootle and Stephanie Edwards (TV), and Peter Jennings is in charge of the news broadcast. The ratings of this program were not good enough to compete with the anchor partners Jim Hartz and Barbara Walters of Today Show, so ABC began to look for new targets.
at the same time, they found that WEWS, a network station located in Cleveland, Ohio, did not broadcast AM America, but broadcast The Morning Exchange, a locally produced program. Different from A.M. America and Today Show, The Morning Exchange is characterized by a relaxed atmosphere, providing real-time news and weather conditions after the beginning and end of each hour, while discussing interesting and entertaining topics at other times. This program has also established a regular guest team, members are experts from various fields, such as health, entertainment, consumption, tourism and so on. Another difference is that this program is not broadcast on the anchor station, but broadcast in the living room-like studio.
ABC took an episode of The Morning Exchange for a pilot broadcast. It received enthusiastic response immediately after the pilot broadcast, so in November 1975, Good Morning America was broadcast in this form, replacing the original A.M. America. The first host of Good Morning America was David Hartman, and Nancy Dussault was co-hosted. In 1977, Dussault was replaced by Sandy Hill.
1976-1989: Growth and Change
According to AC Nielsen's survey, Good Morning America grew steadily in the 197s, although its climbing speed was slow. In the 198s, The Today Show suffered audience loss, especially when Barbara Walters decided to leave NBC to work for ABC. On August 3th, 1976, The Today Show hired Tom Brokaw to take over the anchor job. During this year, The Today Show planned to counter the threat of ratings caused by Good Morning America. In addition to finding female anchor Jenny Baolei to match Brokaw, it also hired a new host, Gene Shalit, to take charge of art and entertainment related issues.
In the 198s, Good Morning America continued to threaten the Today Show. Especially when Brokaw left the Today Show to co-host NBC Night News with Roger Mulder, Good Morning America won the Today Show for the first time, and got the first rating of American morning show, while Today Show was pushed to the second place.
At first, Good Morning America was actually a talk show hosted by David Hartman. Later, Nancy Dussault and Sandy Hill joined, and the new members read more than they did as hosts. In 1998, Hill left the show and was replaced by Joan Lunden. She is the anchor from WABC, new york. Under the leadership of Hartman and Joan, this program has been quite successful in several seasons. In particular, Joan's popularity made her one of the main hosts. However, the cooperation between the two ended after Hartman retired on February 2, 1987, when episode 3,189 was broadcast.
After Hartman retired, Joan started to partner with Charles Gibson on February 2th, 1987, and the ratings soared instantly. They became the last popular TV news partners in the late 198s and early 199s. This is also the first time that "Good Morning America" normally beat NBC's "Today Show" in ratings.
199-1998: Rise and Decline
After "Good Morning America" became an overwhelming outstanding program in the 199s, Joan and Gibson became an unbeatable partner group, but in the late 1995, they gradually moved from a homeopathic state to an unstable state. Mainly because Joan began to ask for less workload and mentioned to the producers of the TV network that these morning trips were quite hard. Therefore, the chief executive of ABC promised to give her a prime-time program-"Behind Closed Doors", which will be included in ABC's plan. Finally, on May 23, 1997, Joan decided to step down from the anchor station where she had been staying for 2 years, and after she left the program, she was replaced by Lisa McRee, and the program was almost stopped. Especially after Gibson left this program in 1998, and Kevin Newman took his place, when Good Morning America was hosted by MacRae and Newman, many viewers switched to the Today Show, which made it lead again after December 11th, 1995, and its ratings soared.
1999-2: Gibson and Sawyer
On November 18th, 1999, in a desperate situation, ABC decided to put all its eggs in one basket. They agreed with Gibson to return to the program, and found diane sawyer as a co-host. This combination should have been a short-term match until ABC can find a suitable person to replace it. However, "Good Morning America" beat "Today Show" again in the ratings at that time because of the appearance of this group of partners, although its audience's favorite degree was still not better than "Today Show" in a week. Therefore, Good Morning America could not change Gibson, Sawyer and their team for seven and a half years. Until March 18th, 2, Antonio Mora, the news anchor, left the program and went to work for WBBM-TV in Chicago, and his position was replaced by Robin Roberts, the former ESPN anchor.
this program was produced on August 3th, 1999, and was moved from the headquarters of ABC News in Lincoln Square to the present location of the Times Square studio. This new location enables this program to be broadcast to the audience in an outdoor studio.
in may p>25, ABC announced that Robert, the new anchor, would be promoted to a major position. Before that, she had been a regular substitute for Gibson or Sawyer. In that year, "Good Morning America" still failed to win the "Tonight Show" in overall ratings, although occasionally one or two episodes won, such as on the day of Pope John Paul II's funeral and when Mariah Carey held a concert in 25, "Good Morning America" won in major viewing areas (such as new york) during its broadcast time. This may be an indicator that the audience of "Today Show" has moved to "Good Morning America". Recently, however, the differences between the audience groups of these two programs have expanded again.
On November 3rd, 25, Good Morning America celebrated their 3th birthday by redecorating the studio in Times Square. Former anchors David Hartman and Joan Langdon, and former meteorologist Spencer Christian all became special guests. Hartman signed his own words of wisdom for this program on the same day: "Let's start and create a beautiful day." (From all of us, make it a good day), that day's "Good Morning America" also became the first morning news program produced in high definition in the United States.
On December 3rd, 25, the weather announcer Tony Perkins left this program. He has been working as a weather announcer since 1999. They dedicated the last ten minutes of the program to Perkins. During that time, he thanked the producer of the program and sincerely said goodbye to three anchors, including Gibson, Sawyer and Lupin. Perkins announced that he would return to his family and then settled in Washington, D.C.. There, he will return to work in WTTG-TV, where he used to be the anchor. He also said emotionally to his children in the air, "Connor, if you are watching TV, dad will go home." (Connor, if you're watching, Daddy's comin' home.), his position was replaced by Mike Buzz, the former morning sports anchor of WGN-TV in Chicago.
On June 28th, 26, David Gibson also finished his hosting work in Good Morning America. As an anchor, he has contributed 19 years to this program, and celebrated that he was finally able to leave the chair of the anchor. When Gibson ended his long career in this seat, he said, "For 19 years, my morning was not only great, but also great." (for 19 years, my mornings have been not just good—they've been great.)
26: Sawyer and Robert era
It is generally predicted that diane sawyer will leave Good Morning America when his contract expires in 27. Because in fact, she always hoped to get the position of ABC World News anchor originally held by Gibson. In August 26, the new anchor of Good Morning America was Chris Cuomo. In addition to continuing to be an anchor at ABC, he also continued to be a senior correspondent of ABC News. At the same time, Sam Champion was appointed as the new weather anchor and weather editor of ABC News. Since then, Como and Qian Bin began to shoulder their respective responsibilities while "Good Morning Today" was rebuilt on September 5, 26. For Como, broadcasting news is also his new job in the field of news. At the same time, on November 13th, 26, Good Morning America also introduced their new logo, this time with gold font and blue background. This logo is similar to the logo used by Good Morning America in 1987. It is also used in the same program of digital TV, which is a head-on blow to the opponent "Today Show".
On June 29th, 27, Joey Siegel, the film critic of this program, died of cancer at the age of 63. Therefore, on July 9th, this episode was specially dedicated to Siegel. Several former anchors including Hartman, Hill, Langdon, Newman, Kristi, Perkins and Gibson all participated in the program and shared their memories and nostalgia for Siegel.
On July 31st, 27, anchor Lupin Robert announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She discovered the problem herself while preparing Siegel's commemorative album, and she continued to work as an anchor until chemotherapy. On March 28th, 28, she had completed all radiation treatments.
On October 22nd, 27, "Good Morning America" introduced their new program appearance, featuring their early designs, adding more golden designs from the original basic blue. And their opening changed from the way that the original host zoomed in when introducing other people to matching music (produced by new york local music production company "DreamArtists Studios"), and the logo of "Good Morning America" fell on the screen. For the first time in many years, they also changed the original clock style on the screen. The small clock features an orange background and the logo of ABC news.
after presenting the new appearance of the program, British fashion critics Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine also mentioned this matter in their reports on the 8th Academy Awards.
On January 15th, 28, in a program interview, diane keaton said that she quite admired Sawyer's beauty, and declared that if he had Sawyer's lips, "I wouldn't have to rely on my fucking personality to work." (I wouldn't have worked on my fucking personality! ) She also said that she would be married now. Keaton quickly apologized for what she said, while Sawyer threatened Keaton to ask her mother to "mind your personality and wash your mouth with soap". This violated the laws and regulations of the Federal Communications Commission, resulting in the producers of Good Morning America and the person in charge of ABC being fined. Committee officials stated that recent changes in legal actions and policies may cause them to feel at a loss when taking any action.
