From Zeng Guofan's Complete Works of Zeng Gong in Qing Dynasty, the original text:
When reading, Gai scholars should be ambitious, knowledgeable and persistent. Aspiring and unwilling to be indecent; If you have knowledge, you know that knowledge is infinite, and you dare not sell yourself short. Such as Hebo watching the sea, such as a well frog peeping into the sky, no one knows; Nothing is impossible if you have perseverance. These three are indispensable.
Translation:
Intellectuals should have ambition, knowledge and perseverance in reading. If you are ambitious, you will never be content with the bottom. If you have knowledge, you know that knowledge is endless and you dare not be satisfied with a little income; For example, seeing the sea with Hebo's eyes and peeping at the sky with frogs in the well are all reasons for ignorance. Nothing is impossible as long as you have perseverance. These three aspects are indispensable.
