The two masters Hanshan and Shide are famous poetic monks in the history of Buddhism. Hanshan once lived in seclusion in Hanyan, Tiantai Mountain. Because of his name, Hanshan wrote beautiful poems, but his temper was very eccentric. He often went to various temples to "look at the sky and curse". The monks said he was crazy, so he He smiled and left. He once worked as a chef monk at the Guoqing Temple in Tiantai Mountain, and he met the monk Shide in the temple as if they were old friends.

Shi De was a poor man. He was abandoned by his parents when he was just born and abandoned in the wilderness. Fortunately, the eminent monk Fenggan from Tiantai Mountain passed by for alms and was compassionate and brought him to the temple to raise him and named him "Shi De". ” and ordained him as a monk in Guoqing Temple. After Shide was ordained, he was assigned to do chores in the kitchen. Hanshan had not yet arrived at Guoqing Temple at that time, but Shide often gave some leftovers to Hanshan who had not yet entered the temple to eat. They were really poor and humble friends. Monk Fenggan of Guoqing Temple saw that they were such a good friend, so he asked Han Shan to enter the temple and work with Shi De as the cook monk of Guoqing Temple.
