From 65438 to 0977, Terry found severe pain in his right knee and was finally diagnosed as osteosarcoma. Three days later, his right leg was amputated.
When he learned that the Canadian government's investment in cancer research was still quite scarce, he decided to contribute his strength to cancer patients.
Terry saw a photo of 1 running a marathon with artificial limbs in the newspaper. He thought he could do it, so he launched the idea of traveling all over Canada to raise money for cancer patients. 1980 April 12, Terry, 2 1 year-old, put on his right leg prosthesis and running shoes and started the "Hope Marathon" running across Canada, with the aim of calling on everyone to donate one yuan for cancer research.
Terry fox runs about 28 miles every day, crossing Canadian towns and telling people his story and the plight of cancer patients. Although not many people paid attention to Terry and his charity activities at the beginning of running, gradually, the young man's courage and will touched the whole of Canada, and people donated money to help each other.
He started from St. John, the easternmost city in Canada, and traveled 3,339 miles (5,374 kilometers) through six provinces. During these 144 days, he ran a marathon (42 195 meters) every day on average.
Terry ran for 143 days, during which he only had one day off, traveled 3339 miles, replaced nine artificial limbs, and raised a huge sum of 24 million Canadian dollars. 1981At 04: 37 am on June 28th, Terry died at the age of 22. However, his famous saying "Actions speak louder than words", and his indomitable spirit has not left. His younger brother used the money he raised to set up the "terry fox Foundation" to help all cancer patients and devote himself to the research of cancer medicine, which has been set up in 55 Canadian provinces.
In the center of Ottawa, the capital of Canada, the elegant and spectacular Parliament Building stands on this hill facing south. The wide Wellington Avenue passes through the front door of the Parliament Building. On the south side of the avenue, there is a figure statue with a height exceeding 1 m. The bronze monument next to the statue is engraved with the name of this sunny boy: terry fox. This is the name of a hero who is well-known in Canada and even the whole world. His forceful footsteps echoed all over the world, and his actions set a shining example for the world.
Fox is not dead, but his spirit lives on. Canadian people miss him and built a bronze statue for him in front of Capitol Hill on July 1 98, which was personally unveiled by former Canadian Governor Roméo LeBlanc.
