Full text translation of "Zheng Banqiao's Reading":
Original text:
Banqiao learned from his father as a child and had no other teacher. When he was young, he was no different from other people. Although he grew up, his appearance was ugly, and it was difficult for people to take care of him. However, reading can be self-suffering, self-infuriated, self-reliant, unconventional, self-conquering, from shallow to deep, from humble to high, from near to far, so as to go to the mysterious areas of the ancients, so as to smooth one's temperament and talents. Endless. People say that Banqiao is good at reading and memorizing, but he is not good at memorizing, but is good at reciting.
Every time Banqiao reads a book, he must read it a thousand times. In the boat, on horseback, under the quilt, or forgetting daggers and chopsticks when eating, or not listening to the words of the guests, and forgetting what they said, they all memorize the book and recite it silently: Is there any reporter in the book?
Translation:
When Banqiao was young, he studied with his father and had no other teacher. There was nothing outstanding about him when he was young, and then he got a little older. Although he grew taller, his appearance was ordinary, and no one thought that he would change.
But he can study hard on his own, be angry on his own, establish his own opinions, and not go along with the world. He constantly studies deeply and carefully, from shallow places to deep places, from low to high, from close to deep. Travel far and wide to reach the profound places of ancient knowledge, so that your little temperament, ability, and energy can flourish. People say that Banqiao is good at reading and memorizing, but they don't know that he is not good at memorizing, but is good at reciting.
Every time Banqiao reads a book, he must read it a thousand times. On the boat, on the horse, under the quilt, sometimes I forget my spoon and chopsticks when eating, sometimes when I face the guests and don’t hear their words, or even forget what I said, they are all silently endorsing the contents of the book, silently Recite. Is there anything about the book that is not remembered?
