"The most useless person is a scholar" means: the most useless person is a scholar.
"A hundred useless people are scholars" comes from the seven-character poem "Miscellaneous Feelings" written by the Qing Dynasty poet Huang Jingren. The whole poem is as follows:
Immortals and Buddhas have not yet come together, and they only know how to be alone at night. Bu Ping Ming. The wind is full of sad songs, and the mud is stained with bad luck.
Nine out of ten people are worth looking down upon, and one is useless as a scholar. Don't worry about the poems and turn them into prophecies. The spring birds and autumn insects make their own noises.
Vernacular translation:
The road to becoming an immortal or a Buddha is slim, and he cannot succeed. He can only write poems alone late at night to express his injustice. The wandering and abject life has drained away the impassioned spirit in the poet's poems. A man who is completely silent and has no frivolous thoughts about women gets the reputation of a heartless man.
Nine out of ten people can roll their eyes at each other, and the most useless ones are scholars. Don't worry that the sad poems you write will become prophecies of good or bad luck. The birds in spring and the insects in autumn will all make their voices heard.
