The meaning of this sentence is: No matter how many reincarnations have passed, time has always existed throughout the ages. The boundless land, space has no obstacles, no direction, no coming or going.
“Throughout the ten generations, ancient and modern, we have always been mindful of it; there is no boundary between us and others.” This is a famous verse written by Li Tongxuan in the Tang Dynasty who commented on the Huayan Sutra.
There is a sentence in Elder Li's summary: "There is no boundary between oneself and others; for ten generations, ancient and modern, it has always been in mind." This is Elder Li's famous saying. . He said that those who preach are not hindered by space. A temple is a land. The Western Paradise is the land of Amitabha Buddha. Our Saha world is the land of Sakyamuni Buddha. The Eastern Glazed World is the land of Medicine Master Tathagata.
Khasa sometimes represents the realm of the Buddha, and sometimes represents the country. “Self” refers to ourselves; “he” refers to Medicine Master Tathagata, Amitabha Buddha, all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, etc., they are all “him”. Is there another Buddha world? Yes, it’s still within yourself. There is no separation between oneself and others, no hindrance.
In other words: According to Buddhism, he put forward a concept that space is relative, but space has no obstacles, no direction, no size, no coming and going. These principles are all insights.
Master Zhao once said: "Whatever is better now is even better than it was in the past." This means that there are no obstacles in time and space. However, when we meditate, study Buddhism and practice Taoism, we do not have a clear understanding of the concepts of time and space. The reason why we haven’t made progress in meditation is that we are attached to the concepts of time and space. Some people are attached to the Ziwu Maoyou hour, and some people must face the east when meditating.
I heard that some people teach students in the United States. They climb up a tree in the morning and meditate facing the eastern sun. This is all wrong. Some people think that it is wrong to meditate without facing the Buddha statue when they are sitting. The attachment to these concepts must be removed. It should be noted that there is no boundary, and there is no difference between oneself and others.
Time is also relative, there is no absolute. It has always been in mind for ten generations, ancient and modern, and there is no past, present or future. Therefore, every Buddhist scripture writes like this: Where is the Buddha at that moment? There are two reasons for this. One is the habit of Indians, who do not like to have the concept of numbers and time.
When it comes to numbers in India, it means eighty-four thousand. Therefore, the number eighty-four thousand in the Buddhist scriptures is particularly large, which describes a large number. This is to look at Buddhism from the perspective of academic theory. Looking at Buddhist scriptures from the perspective of spiritual cultivation, the most brilliant thing is "one moment". There is only one moment in all eternity. "Ten generations, ancient and present, will always be remembered." Billions of years ago is now, and billions of years in the future will be now. There is only one moment. This one, there is no second one, this "for a while" is used wonderfully.
So if you don’t throw away the concepts of time and space, don’t talk about spiritual practice. If you don’t understand the concepts of time and space, don’t talk about spiritual practice. When we learn Buddhism, we must first completely throw away the concepts of time and space consciousness accumulated over decades and return to the state of a baby. However, is it possible to do this? Very simple!
We look at various theories in the Buddhist scriptures such as no thoughts, no thoughts, and no ability to distinguish. Take Lao Tzu for example, in one sentence, "Concentrate your Qi to become soft, you can even a baby!" When we meditate and do kung fu, That is to say, this is how it should be done.
Extended information
Throughout ten generations, past and present, we have always been mindful; there is no boundary between ourselves and others.
"Throughout ten generations, past and present, we have always been mindful. "Never depart from the present mind; there is no boundary, and there is no separation between oneself and others." This is a famous verse written by Li Tongxuan in the Tang Dynasty's commentary on the Huayan Sutra. Master Shouyu has some teachings on this, fellow practitioners can study it...
One passage is in "But Xiangchen Has Confused His Mind":
The formation of time and space
What is the difference between the Buddhist symbol "卍" and the character "十"? On the surface, the character "卍" is formed by adding an extended cross to the left, right, top and bottom of the character "十". Symbolizes the intersection of time and space. The vertical part represents time, the horizontal part represents space, and the extended part represents rotation.
On the stage of life, we all live in time and space, and time is the formation of delusion. As soon as you can sit still and stop thinking, time will fly by. "The Avatamsaka Sutra" (annotation by Li Tongxuan) says: "In ten generations, ancient and modern, we have never left the thought of it." Even several calamities can be counted in the same thought.
So, how is space formed? With the body, there is a feeling of space. If you sit until there is no physical feeling, there will be no feeling of space. "Huayan Sutra" (annotation by Li Tongxuan) says: "There is no borderland, and there is not even an inch between oneself and others." Therefore, you must cultivate to the point where you can eliminate your delusions and physical sensations, and then you will be liberated. It takes a lot of wisdom to dissolve thoughts, and it takes a huge price to be selfless.
One paragraph is from "The Heart and the Moon Are Bright and Full of Taixu"
Self-Others Are Not Dual
The origin of the world and the concepts and attachments of ordinary people all have a beginning and an end of. But from the ultimate meaning of Buddhism, in this endless dharma realm, there is no beginning or end. It is the starting point and the end point. It is the end point and the starting point. Therefore, the classics tell us: "Dependent origination is like a ring without an end." And Buddhism requires us to understand it right now.
The present moment has no beginning and no end. "Throughout ten generations, ancient and modern, it has never left the present mind; there is no boundary between oneself and others." If you can really understand this verse, the entire Buddha Dharma will be complete. Among them! This is also where the complete stage of Zundi Dharma lies.
Everyone is destined to come into contact with this Dafa, so you should develop your own wisdom from here! Therefore, "protecting the Dharma" means protecting one's own mind, taking good care of one's body, speech, and mind. The entire Dharma protection is included in it. This is called "non-duality of self and others". Everything is created only by the mind. Just grasp "the three realms are based on the mind, and all dharmas are based on consciousness".
