Excerpted from Microsoft CEO Nadella's "Refresh"
I remember 1999 started to contact computers, from MSDOS to WIN3. 1, WIN3.2, WIN95, and then connected to the internet world. For me who is still in middle school, this is a magical experience. And the name Microsoft, naturally always goes hand in hand.

I still remember a joke that spread twenty years ago: Microsoft received a complaint that the computer could not copy the content, and the operator asked how it operated. The complainant said: I press Ctrl+C on my office computer, and then CTRL+V on my home computer. ...

The jokes at that time are no longer ridiculous, but have become a natural demand. Times have changed, social progress promoted by technology is reconstructing our understanding and appeal to the world, and the underlying logic is undergoing profound changes.

Excerpts from the book Refresh that moved me:

1. It's not equipment or technology that moves, but yourself.

If Microsoft disappears, we must know what the world will lose. What makes us different?

We should imagine a world that values the flow of human experience between devices. In such a world, the cloud makes this mobility possible and produces a new generation of intelligent experience. What do you think is moving? It's not equipment or technology that moves, it's yourself.

We need to evolve beyond developing personal productivity tools; We will design an intelligent architecture for computing based on the four principles of collaboration, mobility, intelligence and trust.

1) People still do important work in an individual way, but collaboration is the new normal, so we develop tools to empower teams.

2) We are eager to help everyone improve their productivity, no matter where they are and what equipment they use. Everything, such as data, applications and settings, must be able to move between different computing experiences.

3) Intelligence is a magical power multiplier. In order to succeed in the era of data explosion, people need analytical tools, services and intelligent assistants to help them manage the scarcest resource, namely time.

4) Trust is the cornerstone of everything we build. Because of this, we have increased our investment in safety and compliance, making us a benchmark in the industry.

2. Simple things are the most powerful, but persuasion takes a long time.

I had a direct conversation with hundreds of employees in different levels and departments of the company. Listening is the most important thing I do every day, because it will lay the foundation for my future leadership.

We define our mission, world outlook, vision and culture with a page, and whenever we have the urge to modify it, we will be reminded that "consistency is better than perfection".

In the years before I became CEO, our management team spent too much time explaining this huge company and its strategy. We need a kind of knowledge. The simple framework we have established will help people implement the company's philosophy.

3. Empathy comes from the tempering given by life and from the love of life; Only when people face up to the universal predicament can they have universal empathy.

Because Zain suffers from severe cerebral palsy, he will need a wheelchair and depend on us to live. I'm devastated. But what saddens me more is why my wife and I have encountered such a thing. Fortunately, my wife helped me realize that the point is not what hit me, but to deeply understand Zain's experience, sympathize with his pain and situation, and shoulder our responsibilities as parents.

I realize that only by experiencing the ups and downs of life can we cultivate empathy; If you want to be painless, or less painful, you must accept impermanence. I still clearly remember the troubles caused by Zain's Never Getting Better in my early years. However, things are always changing. If you can deeply understand impermanence, then you will get more peace and won't react too violently because of the ups and downs in life. Only in this way can you have deep empathy and sympathy for the things around you.

Personally, what I am now is inseparable from my parents in India and my family in Seattle. Their language, customs and mentality have influenced me and continue to guide me.

I believe that the situation facing the Nadella family is a great challenge for anyone and requires great courage to face it. This experience is very touching to read, which reminds me of that sentence: because I know that I am merciful. )

As a leader, your job is to find rose petals in the shit pile.

I hope these people don't regard everything as a difficulty; From now on, look at things great and help others build this view. Constraints are real and will always be with us, but leaders are champions to overcome them. What they have to do is make things happen.

First of all, send a clear message to those who participate in * * *. This is one of the most basic things that leaders have to do every minute of every day. I don't want to hear anyone say who is the smartest person in the room. What I want to hear is that they use their wisdom to build a deep understanding within the team and decide the direction of action.

Second, leaders should generate energy, not only in their own teams, but also in the whole company. It is not enough to concentrate all your energy on your own department. In good times and bad times, leaders should inspire optimism, creativity, commitment and growth. In the environment they create, everyone can give full play to their potential. The organizations and teams they have established are improving every day.

Third, find ways to succeed and make things happen. This means promoting people to participate in innovative work that they like and are eager to do; Find a balance between long-term success and short-term victory; When seeking solutions, we should look beyond national boundaries and globally.
