Abstract

Book Excerpt

One of the main causes of fatigue is burnout. Let's look at Alice's example.

Alice is a company employee. One day, she came home exhausted and exhausted. She was really exhausted - headache, backache, didn't want to eat, just wanted to go to bed. Unable to withstand her mother's repeated requests, Alice sat down at the dining table... Suddenly, the phone rang. It was her boyfriend who invited her to dance! At this time, Alice's eyes suddenly lit up, and her whole person became full of energy. She rushed upstairs, changed her clothes and went out. She didn't get home until 3 a.m. She didn't look tired at all and was too excited to fall asleep.

The two completely different performances of Alice's moment are enough to illustrate a certain problem. In just eight hours, was Alice really as exhausted as she appeared? Of course, because she was tired of work, or tired of life. In our world, there may be thousands of Alices, and you may be one of them. Emotional attitudes are more likely to cause fatigue than physical exertions. A few years ago, Dr. Joseph Barmack published an experimental report in the Archives of Psychology explaining how burnout leads to fatigue. Dr. Barmack asked several students to go through a series of boring experiments. As a result, the students felt impatient and sleepy, and complained of headaches, eye fatigue, restlessness, and some even felt sick to their stomachs. Are these all "imagined"? Of course not. These students also did metabolic tests, and the test results showed that when people feel tired, the body's blood pressure and oxygen consumption decrease significantly. And when work is less interesting and engaging, metabolism speeds up.

I have personal experience with this phenomenon. I recently went on vacation to Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies. I went fishing in Coral Bay for several days in a row. Along the way, I passed through bushes that were higher than my head. The crossbar that fell to the ground - I didn't feel tired at all after a total of eight hours of bumpy walking. Why? Because I was so excited, I always imagined the result I was about to get - 6 big and powerful trout! How do you think I would feel if I wasn't interested in fishing? Being at 7,000 feet in a pristine place must have worn me out.

But boredom can tire you more easily than strenuous mountain climbing. Mr. Kingman, the president of a savings bank, told me something.

In July 1953, the Canadian government asked the Canadian Mountaineering Club to provide instructors to train members of the Prince of Wales Forest Guard. Mr. Kingman was one of the instructors. He and the other selected instructors, ranging in age from 42 to 59, led the young team members on the journey. They crossed glaciers, walked through snow, and used ropes to climb 40-meter-high steep cliffs. They climbed Mount Mike, Peak Vice President, and several unknown peaks in the Xiaoyouhe Valley in the Canadian Rockies. After 15 hours of mountain climbing, these young and strong team members were all exhausted.

Is the fatigue of these people due to overworked muscles? Didn’t commando training affect them
