Zheng Zhenduo was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, and originally from Changle, Fujian. An outstanding modern Chinese patriot and social activist, writer, poet, scholar, literary critic, literary historian, translator, art historian, and also a famous collector and exegete.

In 1919, he participated in the May 4th Movement and began to publish works. In 1932, his "Illustrated History of Chinese Literature" was published.
