1. Why doesn't Baoyu love men and women
A remarkable feature of Baoyu in Dream of Red Mansions is that he doesn't love men and loves women. In the words of his friends, Baoyu only likes to play with girls and doesn't like to play with boys.
His motto is: Men are made of mud and women are made of water. This sentence is widely circulated and has been heard by men, women and children.
So what is the intention of Mr. Cao to write such a famous saying?
I think Mr. Cao is very partial to Baoyu. He seems to be the only male character in the book who has a "childlike heart".
He doesn't seem to have the concept of respect or inferiority. In his eyes, the maids who grew up with him are not inferior, but more like classmates and friends who grew up together. His sisters and sisters treat him very well, so he also treats these girls wholeheartedly.
Since he was a child, he loved to stay with girls. He thought they were "fragrant", while men, especially those who hung out in the officialdom and pretended to be snakes, seemed to Baoyu to be "stinky" and smelled rotten all over.
In this way, Baoyu loves neither women nor men. He just takes a childlike innocent eye to judge and evaluate the right and wrong, good and evil around him, and then makes a choice that follows his heart.
2. About men and women in the Red Mansion
The evil of human nature seems to be everywhere in a dream of red mansions, especially in men. Probably Mr. Cao is used to seeing those flies in the feudal society, and the life written is always pessimistic.
So I think maybe to comfort the readers, he created many beautiful female characters.
Let's leave aside the twelve women in Jinling. Even Granny Liu, who has such a strong sense of the market, has many lovely things about her.
There are Liu Xianglian, the young prince who is close to Baoyu, and so on. Don't these men also have their respectable and lovely points?
isn't this life? It is not black or white, but everyone has his own "tears" and "pessimism".
