The Eight Immortals in Drinking refers to He Zhizhang, Li Bai, Li Shizhi, Li Wei, Zhang Xu, Cui Zongzhi, Su Jin and Jiao Sui, all of whom were heavy drinkers, bold and unrestrained literati in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Because of their similar interests, these literati often drank together and were called the Eight Immortals in Drinking by Du Fu.
He Zhizhang is the oldest and most qualified among the eight people. He has a good friendship with Li Bai. He gave Li Bai the nickname of fallen immortals. He often drinks with Li Bai and Zhang Xu. Because of He Zhizhang's broad-minded and uninhibited personality, his poetry is as uninhibited as his personality. He is called a poet fanatic by the world, and he himself calls himself a "Siming fanatic".
Li Bai, whether at that time or in later generations, was famous in the ruling and opposition circles, with far-reaching influence. When He Zhizhang saw him, he said that his immortal in the sky had been banished to the world, which showed his free and easy personality and brilliant knowledge. At the same time, Li Bai was also a poet that Du Fu admired very much. Du Fu wrote more than a dozen poems for Li Bai, and he also paid the most attention to Li Bai in The Eight Immortals in Drinking.
Zhang Xu was a grass sage in the Tang Dynasty. His calligraphy, Li Bai's poems and Pei Min's sword dancing were also called the Three Musts at that time. Li Xian was not only noble in status, but also proficient in music, and he was also very handsome in appearance. Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty called him a "flower slave" and thought that he was handsome and not like a human being. Li Shizhi served as the prime minister of the Tang Dynasty, because of his extensive personality, and he was often calculated by the traitor Li Linfu. Su Jin was clever since he was a child. At that time, people compared him to Wang Can in the Three Kingdoms period. He drank wine and forgot all the Buddhist precepts. Cui Zongzhi and Li Bai have a good friendship. He often went boating with Li Bai on a moonlit night in Jinling, and wrote a poem "Give Li Twelve White". Although he is young, handsome and looks beautiful, he is also an out-and-out alcoholic. Jiao Sui is the only commoner among these eight people, but he is free and easy-going, likes to talk loudly, and often surprises everyone. He is in harmony with these people.
