Zhang Fan, courtesy name Boying and nickname Youshi, was born in Tiemen Town, Xin'an County, Henan Province. He went to private school when he was young and went to Shaanxi in 1902. After 1904, he studied artillery at the Shaanxi Army Primary School and the Baoding Army Crash School, and joined the Chinese Tongmenghui.
After graduation in the spring of 1909, he joined the army and became the main leader of the Shaanxi New Army. After the Wuchang Uprising broke out in 1911, he served as the commander-in-chief of the Qinlong Fu Han Army's eastward expedition. In 1915, he participated in the national defense movement.
