In history, when singing Buddhist songs, there were sayings of "one lotus flower falling" and "all beings are happy when the lotus blooms". From then on, "lotus music" was the same name as "lotus falling", and lotus falling was the earliest It appeared in the Southern Song Dynasty and was called "Luo Hua" at that time. It was a form of Buddhist singing to encourage charity and raise funds. Cao Qiang told reporters that lotus fell was introduced to Shanxi during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty.
At that time, there were floods in Henan, and many refugees fled to Wenshui, Jiaocheng and Pingyao areas in Shanxi. At the same time, they brought the lotus fall to Shanxi, so there were people singing the lotus fall in Jinzhong, Shanxi. Wandering artists and some locals also sing Lian Hua Luo in Jinzhong dialect, which is called "Jinzhong Lian Hua Luo". Taiyuan Lian Hua Luo was developed on the basis of Jinzhong Lian Hua Luo.
In 1962, Cao Qiang was still a crosstalk actor in the Taiyuan Folk Art Federation. At that time, he began to take the initiative to learn Lian Hua Luo based on his own interests. He contacted several old Lianhualuo artists and asked them for advice. Since these old artists all performed in local dialects, the charm of the songs was complicated and difficult to popularize and spread. In order to better inherit and develop Lianhualuo, Cao Qiang made major innovations and reforms in Lianhualuo in terms of language, singing, performance, rhythm and other aspects based on the Taiyuan dialect, Mandarin pronunciation, and careful study of Jinzhong Lianhualuo. In a performance in 1963, the new Lotus Blossom Fall was a great success. From then on, Taiyuan Lotus Blossom Fall was born as a new music genre. The name "Lian Hua Luo" was first seen in the Southern Song Dynasty. Many scholars believe that "Lian Hua Luo" was originally called "Luo Hua" and is a Buddhist singing form to encourage charity and raise funds. The statue of Buddha sits on a lotus throne. Lotus is the flower of Buddhism, so it is called Lian Hua Luo, also called Lian Hua Le, or Luo Zi. Lotus drop was first introduced to Shanxi during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty. At that time, there were floods in Henan, and many refugees fled to Wenshui, Jiaocheng and Pingyao in Shanxi, the richest areas in the country. They brought Lian Hua Luo to Shanxi, so there were wandering artists singing Lian Hua Luo in Jinzhong area. Some local people also joined this team and sang Lian Hua Luo in Jinzhong dialect, which was called "Jinzhong Lian Hua Luo", also known as "Lian Hua Luo". "Jinzhong Luozi", and Taiyuan Lotus Luo was transformed on the basis of Jinzhong Luozi.
After the founding of New China, under the guidance of the party’s literary and artistic policy of “letting a hundred flowers bloom and weeding out the old and bringing forth the new”, the literary and art circles in provincial capitals began to explore traditional culture. In the early 1960s, Cao Qiang, a young crosstalk actor from the Taiyuan Folk Art Federation, began to take the initiative to learn Lian Hua Luo based on his own interests and wishes. He studied with many old folk artists in Wenshui, Jin and other places, and in 1963 he performed his debut work "Three Entrances to Taiyuan" for the Taiyuan audience for the first time at the Jinci Temple Fair. Because Cao Qiang created and performed Lotus Falling, based on careful study of Jinzhong Lotus Falling, he made a series of major innovations and reforms in terms of language, singing, performance, sentences, sentence patterns, rhythm, format, etc., especially In terms of language, it was changed from the original Jinzhong dialect to the Taiyuan dialect representative of Shanxi, and combined with Mandarin pronunciation and collected and refined folk vocabulary to make the language more personalized, visual, and life-oriented. Therefore, according to the creation Later, due to its stylistic characteristics and purpose of making people happy, it was named "Taiyuan Lotus Falling". From this, a brand new type of music was born in the land of Sanjin. After Taiyuan Lotus Falls came out, it was warmly welcomed by the citizens of Taiyuan due to its unique intimacy. The huge social effect it produced was not only unexpected by Cao Qiang himself, but also by his Qulian and the Municipal Cultural Bureau. , which further strengthened his belief in cultivating this new type of music, and thus created many good works that are characteristic of the times, hilarious, and both elegant and popular. After more than 50 years of experience, Cao Qiang is now an old man in his seventies, but he still has not let go of Lianhualuo.
Mr. Cao recalled: "Taiyuan Lotus Falls has been very popular with the public since it came out. Otherwise, I would not have persisted until now. From the 1980s to the early 1990s, The folk art form of Taiyuan Lotus Falls has reached its climax in the land of Sanjin. At that time, people, young and old, showed great interest and enthusiasm for Lotus Falls. It has created a strong sensation, and even the audio-visual products about Lotus Fall are selling like hotcakes, and the fact that three publishing houses are competing to publish audio-visual products about Lotus Fall is enough to illustrate this point."
As Mr. Cao said. It is said that Taiyuan Lotus Falls has been glorious in the past, and this glory is not only caused by people's temporary pleasure, but also the social effect it brings is immeasurable. Cao Lao's unique creations and performances not only satisfy people who love their hometown , the sentiment of loving local culture, and also reflects the profound cultural heritage of the ancient city of Taiyuan from another aspect. However, contrary to expectations, after entering the 21st century, due to the influence of the social premise of emphasizing development but neglecting culture, Shanxi, which has a rich cultural heritage, is facing a "cultural ecological crisis", and the only remaining song species in the city, Taiyuan Lotus Falls, It has also fallen into a "bottleneck" of development.
Mr. Cao also has his own understanding of this: "Taiyuan Lotus Falls began to decline in the mid-to-late 1990s, and the so-called decline is not in terms of creation or form, but mainly in expression. In terms of popularity and social effects, this situation is of course affected by many factors, but it does not mean that people do not like this form of folk art. In fact, many "Lao Taiyuan" and "Xiao Taiyuan" 'I am still enthusiastic and interested in this. The great popularity of the Taiyuan Lotus Fall special party held at the beginning of this year can prove that Taiyuan Lotus Fall is still one of the forms of folk art that the audience loves to see. Therefore, in my lifetime, my biggest wish is to see myself Taiyuan Lianhua Luo, which was founded and has matured, should not be like the "Taiyuan Dagu" and "Taiyuan Qinshu" that were unable to continue and ended up unknown. "Since its establishment, Taiyuan Lianhua Luo has been able to mature and become unique in the music world. It is inseparable from Mr. Cao’s painstaking and persevering research and creation of Taiyuan lotus flowers. However, there has always been a problem that has troubled Mr. Cao, and that is the true successor of Taiyuan Lotus Luo Yi. Although Mr. Cao has been retired for many years and suffers from various diseases, he is still worried about the current situation of Lotus with no successor.
Mr. Cao reluctantly introduced: "I have taught some students in the past, especially during the heyday of Taiyuan Lotus's development, many people came here to study, and some of them had good conditions. There are also those with poorer conditions, but in the end, no one can really accept this art. There are many reasons for this. Some of them quit in spite of the difficulties, and some of them think that there is no development after learning and then give up halfway. Now, Taiyuan Lianhualuo began to decline. There were already very few people coming to study, and even fewer people who could be considered as talents. Therefore, Taiyuan Lianhualuo is now facing a situation where there are no successors and it cannot continue. If I disconnect here, it is very likely that Taiyuan Lotus Falls will gradually become a memory for people."
The founder of Taiyuan Lotus Falls has no real successor. This seems to be a small problem, but it is. It is related to the survival of an art. Of course, neither as an audience nor as a citizen who loves his hometown and local culture, he is unwilling to see such an ending. According to Mr. Cao, in recent years, in addition to continuing to create and perform, he has also been actively looking for qualified students, and has also given lectures and teaching activities in enterprises, institutions, and literary and art groups. The purpose is to pass on his unique skills to aspiring students in his lifetime. Researchers and disseminators of local culture make this artistic treasure carry forward.
