The heart is like a pillar Huang Tingjian
There is a saying that famous teachers produce great disciples, It does not seem to be applicable in the history of calligraphy and painting art. There are few examples of masters and disciples reaching the same height. What we often see is this situation: or the disciple's level is too high, and he is better than his master. For example, Tang Yin was a student of Zhou Chen. , Tang Yin is almost a well-known legend, but Zhou Chen's name and works are known to far fewer people; or the master's level is too high and dazzling, and the disciples can only live in his shadow, and it is difficult to maintain their own There are too many examples of independent personality, no need to list them. Even in modern times, many colleagues are even proud of being the descendants of so-and-so, and have completely lost their ego. There are almost no examples like Huang Tingjian in the Song Dynasty, who took Su Shi as his teacher and was finally recognized by the world. His poetry and calligraphy were both called "Su Huang" with Su Shi.
Huang Tingjian was born in a family of poets and calligraphers. His father, Huang Shugong, admired ancient great philosophers and named his son Bakai, a descendant of the Gaoyang family of the ancient emperor Zhuanxu. His name was Da Lin, and his second son was named Ting Jian. Like most famous writers, Huang Tingjian was smart and precocious when he was a child. He was a child prodigy. When he was studying, he could read five lines of text at a glance. He could memorize them all after reading them several times. At the age of seven, he could compose such a high-style shepherd boy's poem: ?ride The cattle are far away from Qiancun, and the wind of flute can be heard from across the bank. How many famous and wealthy guests in Chang'an are not as good as you if they have exhausted their organs. ?The subsequent development was also logical, and he became an official in the imperial examination.
Destined people are destined to meet. After singing poems and exchanging calligraphy for several years, in 1086 AD, Huang Tingjian and Su Shi, who knew and admired each other, thought about each other day and night, and were in harmony with each other. Friends finally met. Huang Tingjian gave a Taohe stone inkstone as a gift and formally worshiped Su Shi as his disciple. The two only had direct contact with each other for more than three years when they were both officials in the capital. The two stayed together day and night. Huang Tingjian was able to listen to the teacher's teachings with his own ears and benefited a lot. He admired Su Shi very much and regretted that he learned from the teacher too late; Su Shi also How happy are you to have such a talented disciple? He has gained the most talented people in the world, and all your worries are gone.
From the perspective of literature and art, the friendship between Huang Tingjian and Su Shi, the two promoted each other's progress and improvement, creating the immortal legend of the two masters of literature and art. There is such a story recorded in the third volume of "Duxing Magazine" by Zeng Minxing in the Song Dynasty. Dongpo said: "Although Lu Zhi's recent characters are fresh and vigorous, his writing style is sometimes too thin, almost like a snake hanging from the treetops." ?Gu Gu said: ?I don't dare to talk lightly about Gongzhi, but suddenly I feel that it is shallow, and it is like a toad pressed by a stone. ?The second gentleman laughed, thinking that he was deeply ill. This passage is translated as follows: Su Shi said to Huang Tingjian: "Xiao Huang, although your recent handwriting looks very fresh, sometimes your strokes are too thin, just like a snake hanging on the treetops." ?Huang Tingjian said: ?Teacher, of course I dare not give any advice on your calligraphy, but, but? Sometimes it feels shallow, much like a toad trapped under a rock!? The two laughed at each other, thinking that the other party They all pointed out their shortcomings. From here we can also see that Huang Tingjian took Su Shi as his teacher, but he also commendably maintained his own artistic personality.
However, his firm following of Su Shi ultimately affected his career development. Although he was talented, he never became a high-ranking official in his life. Because he was involved in party strife, he was repeatedly demoted to the wilderness. "History of the Song Dynasty: Biography of Huang Tingjian" records that after he was demoted, he remained idle and did not mind his deportation.
Scholars from Shu admired him for his travels, he lectured tirelessly, and his writings were worthy of his instruction. It can be seen from this that Huang Tingjian is not the kind of scholar who puts his life in the cause of governing the world. He advocates the integrity of personality more. His practice lies in the perfect expression of life experience and the understanding of the way of the world. In the turmoil of the world, his heart was like a pillar, his practice gradually deepened, and so did his writing skills.
Putting aside his attainments in literature, we will only talk about art here. Among the four great calligraphers of the Song Dynasty, Su, Huang, Mi, and Cai, Huang Tingjian is a very special one. Like Cai Xiang, he followed the ancient methods. , but he was able to innovate with a brand-new look; he was as creative as Su Shi, but he relied solely on his profound skills to demonstrate a high degree of skill, leaving countless inspirations to future generations. In the process of learning from the strengths of others over the years, his "valley radiator" that is stretched, majestic, elegant, calm and joyful has been brewed. His calligraphy, whether large or small, running or cursive, is broad and majestic and shocking.
It is enough to have a confidant in life. If this friend is Su Shi, an all-round talent in the world, and the heartthrob, and you are his most proud disciple and best buddy, and have been in tune with each other for many years, what would it be like? The beauty of friendship, even if you have gone through hardships, been repeatedly attacked and persecuted by opponents, and been displaced all year round, as long as you have such a friend, you can talk about the world, sing poems, sing poems, and exchange calligraphy together, and there is nothing else in the world. The pain is insignificant. However, when he left this world before you, the loss and loneliness of "lost" will be so painful! In August 1101 AD, a generation of literary giant Su Shi died of illness in Changzhou, Huang Tingjian lost this He was a good mentor and friend whom he admired all his life. He was deeply saddened in his heart and hung in the statue room for the rest of his life. In the next four years, he wrote countless poems and essays in memory of Su Shi, expressing his deep sorrow and deep remembrance. At the same time, he also tried his best to carry forward Su Shi's cultural thoughts.
In his later years, he was relegated to the remote Yizhou (Guangxi), where he lived in extreme poverty. He lived in a shabby house without a roof and exposed to the rain and wind, and the city was buzzing with anger. Instead of borrowing money to buy rice, he still left an IOU, which later became the "Loan Money Post". He didn't even have the money to buy a good brush for writing, so he still wrote smooth calligraphy with a three-yuan chicken feather pen. As he got older, his handwriting got better and better. There was no sign of decay between the lines, and he became more and more vertical and horizontal. Stretch and be generous. He is also very confident in himself: ?Depending on old age and disease, he is unable to do anything, but he feels that the calligraphy is getting better and better? What a strong artistic vitality is accumulated under these words as calm as water!
In September 1105 AD, the autumn weather in Yizhou was still very hot. It suddenly started to rain lightly. Huang Tingjian was drinking in the south building. He was drunk and sat on the bed with his feet outside the railing to relieve himself from the rain. He turned around and said to his friend next to him: "It's so comfortable. I have never been so happy in my life!" He was caught in the rain and cold. A few days later, he died in the South Tower of Yizhou at the age of 60.
Huang Tingjian's calligraphy had a very wide influence in the Song Dynasty. From the emperor to the common people, everyone was willing to learn his calligraphy. Up, horizontally, diagonally, high and down, everything is unsatisfactory?, the evaluation is quite high. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, many people were keen to learn from Huang Tingjian, but it was difficult for them to surpass him. Just a few years ago, Huang Tingjian's calligraphy volume "Inscriptions on Pillars" was sold for a sky-high price of 436.8 million yuan, setting a transaction record for Chinese calligraphy and painting artworks. Although there has been controversy over the authenticity of this work, according to literature, "Ti Zhu Ming" "Pillar Pillar" is indeed a theme he has written many times, "The world is extremely decadent, but my heart is like a pillar." In that era of fierce party struggle and unpredictable power, his personality was as firm and upright as a pillar, and his heart was With a high ambition and an unimpeded mind, through inclusiveness and bold innovation, he finally formed his own unique style and finally established his own school. Together with Su Dongpo, Mi Fu and Cai Xiang, they were known as the "Four Masters of the Song Dynasty" by their contemporaries.
