Abai’s Thoughts

Abai is a poet and a great thinker. In the darkest and harshest era of Kazakh history, he pointed the way forward for his compatriots, and his thoughts nurtured an entire generation of Kazakhs.

In the half of the 19th century, the Kazakhs were still groaning under the oppression of religious fog and feudal patriarchal system. Abai told people that nothing in the world is eternal. "After the freezing winter, there is a warm spring with green grass and rippling blue waves." The patriarchal system can also be changed. Kazakh shepherds, who had suffered for generations, saw light and hope under Abai's revelation, built up confidence, and bravely bid farewell to the old century.

Abai also put forward new ideas for the economic structure of pastoral areas. He clearly pointed out the vulnerability of a single pastoral economy and asked people to develop agricultural production and diversified operations. This has played a certain guiding role in the transition from a single, unstable animal husbandry economy in Kazakh pastoral areas to a comprehensive economy with diversified operations. Abai also pointed out that it is impossible to develop science, culture and education when material production is backward, and therefore it is impossible to change people's fate of poverty and backwardness. He called on people to work hard to engage in productive labor, lay a reliable material foundation for the development of science and culture, and accumulate necessary wealth. This is visionary.

Abay's main contribution to Kazakh culture and folklore lies in his poetry, which expressed great nationalism and the growth of Kazakh folk culture. .Before him, most Kazakh poetry was oral, echoing the nomadic habits of the Kazakh steppe people. .During Abai's lifetime, however, some important socio-political and socio-economic changes took place. In Kazakhstan, Russian influence continues to grow, leading to greater educational possibilities, as well as exposure to some different ideas, whether Russian, Western or Asian. Abai immersed himself in the cultural and philosophical history of these newly opened territories. .In this sense, the poetry created by Abai influenced the philosophical thought of educated Kazakhs.
