"Yan's Family Instructions": Caught in growth, will eventually become immoral
When a child has a cough, his teacher Bao Gu Ming Ming, filial piety, benevolence, etiquette and justice, will teach him. Even if you are unable to do it, you should treat it like an infant, know people's colors, know people's joys and anger, and then give instructions, do what you want to do, and stop when you stop.
If you wait until a certain age, you can save the penalty. If parents are majestic and kind, their children will be cautious and filial.
I see that in the world, there is love without teaching, which is not always the case. When it comes to food and drink, please follow their own desires. It is advisable to give warnings and reward them, and when you answer them, you laugh. When you have knowledge, you can tell the Dharma.
Once arrogance has been learned, it is copied, beaten and beaten to death without power, and the anger grows and resentment increases, and it is caught in the growth, and ultimately it is a bad virtue.
Confucius said: "A little success is like nature, and habits are like nature."
As the proverb goes: "When a wife first comes to teach a baby, she teaches the baby." What a true saying!
Translation of Family Instructions
After a child is born, a teacher will explain filial piety, benevolence, propriety, and righteousness to guide his learning.
Even if ordinary people cannot do this, they should teach and admonish babies when they can recognize people’s faces and understand emotions and anger, guide their behavior, and prevent their mistakes. When they are a few years old, they can No whipping punishment.
As long as parents are majestic and loving, their children will naturally be respectful, cautious and obedient.
I have seen in the world that some people do not educate their children, but only love them. They do not think it is right every time. These people indulge their children's eating, drinking, playing and all other behaviors as they please. He praised when he needed to be admonished, and laughed when he needed to reprimand.
When the child becomes sensible, he still thinks this is right. At this time, when the child's pride and neglect have become a habit, you start to stop them. Then even if you are whipped to death, you will not be able to establish dignity. Being more angry every day will only increase resentment. When he grows up, Eventually you will become a person with corrupt moral character.
Confucius said: "What is developed since childhood is like nature, and what is accustomed to becomes natural." It is very reasonable.
As the saying goes: "You should teach your daughter-in-law when she first comes, and you should teach your children when they are babies." This is indeed true.
Appreciation of Family Instructions
This article is excerpted from Volume 1 of "Yan's Family Instructions" "Teaching Children Second". Comparing the methods of educating children in society, I agree with Confucius's understanding that "little success is like nature, and habits are like nature".
He believes that educating children should start from childhood, or even earlier infancy, and ingrain correct concepts in children's minds from an early age, so as to avoid "immorality" in children.
This advanced educational concept is still worthy of our study.
"Yan Family Instructions" is a family instruction created by Yan Zhitui during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
This book was written after Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty destroyed the Chen Kingdom and before Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty came to the throne (about the end of the 6th century AD). This is Yan Zhitui's work describing his personal experiences, thoughts, and knowledge to warn his descendants.
