Speaking of the famous minister Zuo Zongtang, the first thing we think of is his recovery of Xinjiang. He is also an upright minister in everyone's mind. But when Zuo Zongtang passed away, there were still three things that made him unable to rest in peace. Cixi's arbitrary power, the arrogance of foreigners in China, and the confrontation with Li Hongzhang.
Zuo Zongtang made many achievements in history and was a role model for many literati and courtiers. His recovery of Xinjiang was his first greatest achievement, Zhejiang was his second greatest achievement during the Taiping Rebellion, and the pacification of Xiniang was his third greatest achievement. He was such a great man, and he still had many unfulfilled wishes until his death. Putting national affairs in his heart was probably his lifelong pursuit. There are three such things in history that made Zuo Zongtang difficult to deal with. 1. Empress Dowager Cixi’s Autocratic Power
In our ancient history, except for Wu Zetian, there were few empress dowagers in the past dynasties who had exclusive power. In many dynasties, there was even a saying that the harem could not interfere in politics, like Zuo Zongtang. A person who abides by the family motto of his ancestors will never allow the Empress Dowager Cixi to be arbitrary and authoritative. He fought hard for the people throughout his life, but also sincerely resisted the corrupt politics of the Qing court. But he did not put this disgust on the surface, but did some good things for the country from the bottom of his heart. The mutual dislike between Zuo Zongtang and Cixi was not superficial. Even after the death of such an important minister as Zuo Zongtang, the Empress Dowager Cixi did not show sadness. 2. The arrogance of foreigners
It is rumored that Zuo Zongtang had a big quarrel with the French at the door of the French Concession, and even tore down a sign posted at the door insulting the Chinese. Zuo Zongtang was full of patriotism and always kept the country's danger in mind. Not everyone has the courage to sacrifice one's life for the country. At that time, foreigners were very afraid of Zuo Zongtang, and they did not dare to act recklessly while Zuo Zongtang was still alive. But after Zuo Zongtang passed away, he began to put up signs insulting the Chinese again. 3. Li Hongzhang
Everyone familiar with history knows that Zuo Zongtang, an upright minister, had never been on good terms with Li Hongzhang at that time. But this discord was not due to jealousy of Li Hongzhang's talent, but to the political differences between Zuo Zongtang and Li Hongzhang. If we use current terms, Zuo Zongtang is more upright, while Li Hongzhang is somewhat compromising. It is not difficult to see from this that after his death, Zuo Zongtang still worried about whether Li Hongzhang would compromise with Empress Dowager Cixi.
A capable minister like Zuo Zongtang has spent his whole life doing his best for the country and the people. Even after his death, he pretended to be the country. Zuo Zongtang worried about many things in his life, among which the above three things were the most important.
