Proceduralization of writing teaching
1. In Chinese courses, it is difficult to list objective subject elements, indispensable concepts and recognized theorems similar to physics and mathematics. Even if someone can list some concepts and principles, students may not be able to improve their Chinese literacy if they memorize these concepts.
2. Composition has the closest relationship with people’s inspiration, talent, personality and creativity, and therefore is also the most elusive. So far, in the entire human knowledge framework, there are still almost no consensus on the generally accepted concepts/principles of composition teaching. It is also difficult for students' composition ability to be directly proportional/measurable like mathematics/physics, through memorizing formulas/principles and other knowledge/learning examples, and through standardized and rigorous skill training. Because of this, many people in society generally believe that there are almost no rules in composition, and students' composition level cannot be taught by teachers.
3. How to improve students’ composition level? Chinese teachers often use two methods in teaching composition: one is to ask students to read a lot, write diligently, and find out the tricks themselves; the other is to explain the requirements and methods of "what is a good composition" and "how to write a good composition", but does not give them any instructions. Providing specific guidance to students has little effect on improving students' composition skills, so it cannot be used to teach composition to others.
4. For more than two thousand years, traditional Chinese learning activities have provided a large number of successful examples for this point of view. From the folk saying "If you have read three hundred Tang poems by heart, you will be able to recite them even if you don't know how to recite them", to the conclusion of experts and scholars that "there is no fixed method for writing"; from Du Fu's famous academic saying "Reading thousands of volumes, writing is like a spirit", to Lu Xun's cynical statement "never believed in writing methods", and all excellent literary works are marked with "how to write", all of which show the inefficiency of classroom teaching in students' composition improvement. Because of this, the basic model of composition teaching has been to rely on students to read a large number of articles for a long time, comprehend the beauty of excellent essays, and slowly accumulate standards for judging and analyzing the merits of articles; and then through a large number of fragmented essays Practice writing to gain writing experience. This writing learning method that focuses on imitation and acquisition can certainly improve students' composition level through long-term study, but it comes at the cost of a lot of time and energy.
5. Middle school writing teaching does not undertake the mission of making students become writers, but only undertakes the task of enabling students to initially possess the ability to use words to express emotions. As a social person, people should have basic written expression skills, such as the common skills of choosing words and sentences, the basic rules of planning and layout, the basic skills of conveying emotions, and the basic formats of common literary styles. People still have a lot of inclinations. There is a big difference between teaching and not teaching.
6. Just like the formulas of moves in chess, the decomposition of movements in competitive sports training, and the sketching of beginners in painting, they are all the basis for high-level creative activities. High-level athletes compete for victory on the field and compete with strong opponents, mostly relying on personal talent and improvisation on the spot. However, for junior learners, in daily training, they may wish to use some decomposed movements to complete basic exercises. The basic movement essentials are essential for getting started, reflecting the basic requirements of the project activities and serving as the steps leading to high-level creation.
7. The thinking of writing teaching must be changed. It is to concretize the composition teaching process and provide practical help to students through the guidance of the composition teaching process. Because if teachers can provide effective guidance to students in the writing process, they can greatly shorten their journey from "raw" to "familiar" and from "clumsy" to "skilled", thus improving the effectiveness of composition teaching.
