1. Mencius
Mencius, one of the representative figures of Confucianism, said that "born in sorrow, died in happiness" is the consciousness of being prepared for danger in times of peace. The expression means that a sad and troubled situation can make people work hard to survive, and a comfortable and happy life can make people slack off and lead to extinction. Only with a certain sense of crisis and anxiety can we survive in the fierce competition.
2. Li Shimin of Emperor Taizong
Emperor Taizong once said to his close ministers, "Governing the country is like curing a disease. Even if you get well, you should rest and nurse yourself. If you let yourself loose immediately, once the old disease recurs, there is no way to save it.
Now the country is fortunate to have peace and tranquility, and all ethnic minorities in all directions obey it. This is really rare since ancient times, but I am getting more and more careful every day, only afraid that this situation will not last long, so I really hope to hear your advice and arguments many times. "
Wei Zhi replied, "I don't think it's worth celebrating that domestic and foreign countries have been governed and peaceful, but I'm glad that your majesty is prepared for danger in times of peace."
3. Wei Jiang
During the Spring and Autumn Period, twelve countries jointly sent troops to attack the State of Zheng. The monarch of the State of Zheng hurriedly made peace with the largest of the twelve countries, and got the consent of the State of Jin. The other eleven countries also stopped attacking. In order to express their gratitude, Zheng sent a large number of gifts to the State of Jin.
Duke Mourning of Jin gave eight singers to his hero Wei Jiang, who wanted to enjoy them together. However, Wei Jiang declined the reward and advised Duke Mourning of Jin: "I hope that while enjoying the happiness, you can think that there are still many things to do in the country. There is a saying in the Book of Songs:' Be prepared for danger in times of peace, and be prepared for danger.' Now I would like to persuade my Lord with this!
Wei Jiang's farsighted and earnest words made Duke Mourn of Jin very moved and happily accepted Wei Jiang's opinion.
