He can be destroyed, but not defeated
— -Hemingway's Suicide Quest
As the greatest American novelist of the 20th century, Hemingway's shot not only knocked away most of his own soul, but also stunned the entire United States and even the world. People immediately realized that something vital had suddenly disappeared from this world. Once Hemingway died, their own lives were eclipsed. People are in agony, as if Hemingway "has ruined our lives. Now I am also a dead person." (Ordonez)
When Juan Belmond, the most outstanding bullfighter in Spain, heard the "bolt from the blue" that "Ernest had just committed suicide", he just slowly After uttering three words slowly but clearly, "Well done!", he ended his life in the same way.
Hemingway is so great, as great as a towering tree. Now that the tree has fallen, where should people go to enjoy the shade? And those who were suffocated by this big tree finally found an opportunity to teach the old lion Hemingway a lesson: "Who would do such a dirty thing? How could he leave a mess of dirt? Let others clean up your things?" Arnold Ginglitch's gloating was palpable.
As for the mood of the American public, the great poet Frost gave an apt description on the day after Hemingway committed suicide:
He was tenacious and did not begrudge life; he was tenacious and did not begrudge himself. . ... Fortunately for us, he gave himself enough time to show his greatness. His style dominates the way we tell stories, long and short. I still remember my obsession with reciting "The Killer" aloud to everyone I met. He is a friend that I will always miss. The whole country was immersed in mourning.
("The New York Times")
In a country where the whole country will not mourn even after the death of the president, how could Hemingway make the whole country "immersed in mourning"? Just for his unique works and his tough guy spirit! Hemingway himself and his characters influenced an entire generation or even several generations of Americans, and people rushed to imitate him and the characters in his works. He is the embodiment of the American spirit. People are crying for this spirit.
In the early morning of July 2, 1961, Hemingway entered the basement wearing pajamas and a bathrobe. He took out his gun and a box of ammunition, and then went into the foyer. He loaded two bullets into the shotgun, slowly opened his mouth, inserted the gun tip, and gently pulled the trigger...
People don't understand that Hemingway once cursed suicide. His father was a coward. Now, when he has everything, including reputation, status, money, friends, women, and even the Nobel Prize for Literature, why would he follow in his father's footsteps?
Hemingway's blood burned with the desire to commit suicide inherited from his father, and his whole life was a struggle against this suicidal impulse. In the 1930s, he mentioned in a biography: Suicide, like exercise, is an escape from the intense and difficult writing life. "Green Mountains of Africa" ??strongly praises the pleasure brought by shotguns. In "To Have and Have Not", Hemingway aims this tool that can bring sensory enjoyment not only at animals, but also at himself.
He felt that this device could solve all psychological, moral, medical and financial problems once and for all, and was "that beautifully crafted device that can cure insomnia, eliminate regret, cure cancer, and prevent bankruptcy, all with the touch of a fingertip." A tool for blasting a way out of an unbearable situation."
The two reasons for suicide that everyone accepts nowadays are that Hemingway could not bear the physical and mental pain and the failure of his creativity. Indeed, Hemingway neglected and even ruined his health for a long time, causing him serious physical and mental damage. He suffered from marasmus, skin diseases, alcoholism, vision loss, diabetes, hemochromatosis, hepatitis, nephritis, hypertension, mental illness and more. He also agreed with Nietzsche: "Death at the right time. The most glorious thing is to die at the peak of happiness." Yes, the creation of his recent autobiographical work "The Mobile Communion" was in trouble, and electrotherapy caused memory failure. The wise saying he followed throughout his life was: Man can be destroyed, but he can never be defeated. Perhaps, he was worried that he would be defeated and destroyed himself.
"When he was no longer the man he thought Hemingway was, he wanted to die." Didn't he himself say it a month before his death: "What does a person care about? The body. Healthy. Work hard. Eat and drink with friends, and enjoy life in bed. "The implication is that he has nothing left except the freedom to commit suicide. This is the legendary figure who finally accepted this freedom. The last hero of the 20th century fell under his own gun, and the hunter's last prey was himself. Hemingway, the old lion!
