In his speech at Stanford in 2005, Steve Jobs said:

When I was young, there was an inspiring magazine called "Catalog of the Entire Earth," which was the most inspiring magazine for our generation. one of the bibles. It was written by a guy named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he magically brought this book into the world like a poem. This was the late sixties, before personal computers, so the book was all made with a typewriter, scissors, and polarizers. It's a bit like Google in a soft wrapper, thirty-five years before Google came along: it was idealistic, with lots of neat tools and great ideas.

Stewart and his partners published several issues of Catalog of the Whole Earth, and when it had completed its mission, they produced the final issue. That was in the mid-seventies, your era. On the back cover of the last issue was a photo of an early morning country road, which you could find yourself if you were adventurous. Under the photo, there is this sentence: "Be hungry for knowledge, be humble and foolish." This is their farewell message when they cease publication.
