Zhang Ren is a native of Shu County, Yizhou. He was born into a poor family. However, Zhang Ren has been bold and courageous since he was a child, and he has ambition and integrity. Later, he became an official in Yizhou and worked as an official. ?

At the end of 212 AD (the seventeenth year of Jian'an), Liu Bei led his troops to attack Liu Zhang and occupied Fucheng in Guanghan County. In 213 AD (the 18th year of Jian'an), Liu Zhang sent Zhang Ren, Liu Quan, Leng Bao, Deng Xian and others to lead troops to fight Liu Bei's army in the Fujian area, but they were all defeated by Liu Bei, and Zhang Ren and others retreated to Mianzhu.

Liu Bei led his army to attack Mianzhu. Liu Zhang appointed Li Yan as the guard and the commander of the Mianzhu army to resist Liu Bei. However, Li Yan led his men to surrender to Liu Bei, and Mianzhu fell into Liu Bei's hands. Zhang Ren and Liu Huang retreated to Luocheng, where they resisted Liu Bei's attack with Liu Zhang's son Liu Xun.

Afterwards, Liu Bei marched to surround Luocheng. Zhang Ren led his troops to fight at Jinyan Bridge, but was defeated and captured. Liu Bei heard about Zhang Ren's loyalty and bravery, and ordered his sergeants to persuade Zhang Ren to surrender. Zhang Ren replied sternly: "Old minister, I will never serve two masters after all." He was killed, and Liu Bei sighed for it.

Zhang Ren is Marshal of Sichuan in "Three Kingdoms", and his image is more inconsistent than in history.
