One day, Wukong asked Buddha: What is love?
Buddha said: I ask you to cross this rice field to pick the largest and most golden wheat ear and come back, but there is a rule: you cannot go back, and you can only pick it once.
So Wukong did it.
After a long time, he came back empty-handed.
Buddha asked him why he came back empty-handed?
Wukong said: When I was walking in the field, I saw a few particularly big and brilliant wheat ears. However, I always thought that there might be bigger and better ones ahead, so I didn’t. But when I continued walking, the wheat ears I saw always felt that they were not as good as the ones I saw before, so I didn't pick anything in the end.
Buddha said meaningfully: This is love.
Another day, Wukong asked Buddha: What is marriage?
Buddha said: I ask you to go through this forest, cut down the thickest and strongest tree and put it in the house as a Christmas tree, but there is a rule: you cannot go back, and you can only Cut once.
So Wukong did it.
After a long time, he came back with a tree that was not the tallest and thickest but not too bad either.
Buddha asked him why he only cut down such a tree.
Wukong said: When I was walking through the woods, I saw some very good trees. This time, I learned the lesson from picking wheat ears last time. When I saw this tree, it was not bad. I chose it, but I was afraid that if I didn’t choose it, I would miss the opportunity to cut down the tree again and come back empty-handed, even though it is not the best tree I have ever encountered.
At this time, Buddha said meaningfully: This is marriage.
