Historical evolution

Baoshan is named after the mountain. In 1412 (the tenth year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty), a mountain of earth was built artificially on the seashore of the territory. It was used as a navigation mark to guide ships entering and leaving the Yangtze Estuary. Emperor Yongle named it Baoshan. This mountain collapsed into the sea in 1582 (the tenth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty), but its name is still used today.

Baoshan, originally belonging to Jiangsu Province, was separated from Jiading County in 1742 (the second year of Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty) and established as Baoshan County. When the county was established, the county bounded to the east and north from the Yangtze River, to the south to Zhabei Tianmu Road, to the west to Jiejing and Yangjing at the junction of Jiading, to the southeast to the Gaoqiao area east of the Huangpu River, and to the southwest to the Zhenru area, with an east-to-west length of 38 kilometers. It is 41.5 kilometers wide from north to south and covers an area of ??419 square kilometers. In 1928 (the 17th year of the Republic of China), seven cities and towns including Zhabei, Jiangwan, Yinhang, Wusong, Pengpu, Zhenru, and Gaoqiao were placed under the Shanghai Special City, and their territory was reduced by half. During the Anti-Japanese War after 1937 (the 26th year of the Republic of China), the entire territory was placed under the jurisdiction of Shanghai City. The area north of Zaobang was Baoshan District, the south of Bang was divided into the downtown area (Jiangwan) and Hubei District, and Changxing was returned to the northeast of Pudong. district. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, except for Dachang, which was placed under the jurisdiction of Shanghai City, the rest were returned to Jiangsu Province according to the pre-war organizational structure, covering an area of ??about 200 square kilometers. After liberation, it initially belonged to the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Region and later to Jiangsu Province.

In 1958, the entire territory was assigned to Shanghai City. In the same year, Hengsha Island and the northern suburbs were merged. The territory extended east to south, with the eastern edge reaching the east coast of Hengsha Island and the southern edge reaching Guangzhong Road and Dalian. Along the West Road and Zoumatang line, the previously designated areas of Jiangwan, Yinhang, Wusong and Dachang returned to Baoshan, with the area expanded to 443.64 square kilometers. In 1960, Wusong Town and both sides of Changjiang Road south of Zaobang were set aside to establish Wusong District. In 1964, Wusong District was merged into Yangpu District. After 1980, due to the construction needs of Baosteel, Wusong District was re-established on the basis of the Baosteel Regional Office of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, dividing the administrative area under the jurisdiction of the Baosteel Regional Office and Chengxiang Town of Baoshan County, as well as part of the area between Baosteel and Wusong. It is under the jurisdiction of Wusong District (i.e., Chengxiang Town and part of Wusong, Songnan, Miaoxing, Yuepu, Shengqiao and other townships). In 1984, the downtown area was expanded, and the two towns of Jiangwan and Wujiaochang and some rural areas in the southern area were assigned to Hongkou, Yangpu, Zhabei, Putuo and other districts.

In January 1988, with the approval of the State Council, Baoshan County and Wusong District were abolished and Baoshan District was established.
