Disable Internet Explorer add-ons you don't recognize

When you visit a website, add-ons may download themselves without your consent, or you may be prompted to download them . These add-ons may cause Internet Explorer to slow down or stop responding. You should remove any Internet Explorer add-ons you don't recognize.

How to identify malicious add-ons?

Malicious add-ons can often be found under the Name column in the Manage Add-ons dialog box. A malicious add-on may have:

A blank name.

A name that contains random characters or a series of numbers and letters (such as fhriduvh.dll or f6rid8vh.exeas relative to Windows Messenger).

You may not recognize the publisher name.

How to disable add-ons?

Open Internet Explorer.

Depending on your Internet Explorer, do one of the following:

Click the Tools menu, and then click Manage Add-ons.

Click the Tools menu, point to Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons.

Click the name of the add-in.

Click "Disable". You may have to restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect.

Why do some add-ons appear as "(Unverified)" in the "Published by" column?

If "(Not Verified)" appears in the Publisher column of the Manage Add-Ins dialog box, the add-in itself may not be digitally signed (even if the program that installs the add-in is digital signature). Digital signatures verify that a document actually comes from the stated individual or issuer and has not been tampered with after being digitally signed.

How do I disable add-ons if I can't access Internet Explorer?

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click "Internet Options".

Click the Programs tab, and then click Manage Add-ons.

Click the add-in's name and select Disable.

When the Add-in Status dialog box appears, click OK to close.

Additional Troubleshooting

If you continue to receive this error report after performing the standard troubleshooting steps, we recommend that you continue with the following additional troubleshooting steps.

Disable all add-ons (one at a time) until the problem no longer occurs

Close all Internet Explorer windows.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click "Internet Options".

Click the Programs tab, and then click Manage Add-ons.

Click the name of the add-on that you want to disable, and then under Settings, click Disable.

Click OK.

Restart Internet Explorer. Continue the same way you used Internet Explorer when you received the error report.

If Internet Explorer still crashes after disabling this add-on, continue to step h.

Disable all third-party browser extensions (another name for add-ons)

Close all Internet Explorer windows.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Double-click Internet Options.

Click the Advanced tab.

Under Browsing, clear the Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart) check box.

Restart Internet Explorer.

Note: When you turn off third-party browser extensions and restart Internet Explorer, all third-party browser extensions will be unavailable. These components can be easily re-enabled.

Perform a Full Service Scan using the Windows Live OneCare Security Scanner

Access the Windows Live OneCare Security Scanner and click Full Service Scan.
