In December 2011, South Korea's SM Entertainment Co., Ltd. officially announced that it will launch 12 EXO-M is a Chinese (currently 9-member) boy band EXO, which is a sub-unit of a Chinese-Korean mixed Chinese-speaking group that adds representative Mandarin (Chinese) after EXO and is mainly Chinese and operates in China. Each member of EXO-M entered SM as a trainee through various auditions. Before their debut, they received professional training in the company for different periods of time from one to four years. Starting from December 27, SM has announced 4 Chinese members on its official website, official Weibo, etc.: Lu Han (has quit the team), Huang Zitao (has quit the team), Zhang Yixing, Wu Yifan (has quit the team), and 2 Korean members :Kim Jongdae, Kim Minseok, EXO-M started the debut teaser display of the 100-day countdown to their debut. On March 31 and April 1, 2012, EXO-M and EXO-K held two showcase debut conferences in Seoul, South Korea and Beijing, China.
In April 2012, EXO-M officially debuted and released their first mini album "MAMA". In November of the same year, they won the Best Asian Newcomer Group Award at the Hong Kong Asian Music Festival. On June 3, 2013, the regular album "XOXO (Kiss&Hug)" was released. On August 5, the follow-up album "XOXO Kiss&Hug Repakage" was released. On December 23, the follow-up album's lead song "Growl" was selected as the best K-Pop music of 2013 by the US Billboard chart. On December 27, album sales exceeded 1 million copies. On May 7, 2014, the second mini album "Overdose" was released.
