Wen Tianxiang's explanation
(1236-1283) Minister of the Southern Song Dynasty and hero of the Anti-Yuan Dynasty. His courtesy name was Lushan and his nickname was Wenshan. He was a native of Jishui, Jizhou (now part of Jiangxi). The top scholar at the age of twenty. In 1275, the Yuan army marched eastward along the Yangtze River and invaded Lin'an (today's Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province). He recruited rebels in his hometown of Ganzhou and went to Lin'an, where he served as Prime Minister. He once sent an envoy to the Yuan camp to negotiate, but was detained. Later, he escaped from danger and returned to the south to reorganize his army and persist in resisting the Yuan Dynasty. He was captured in Wupoling (now Haifengbei, Guangdong) in 1278. He was escorted to the north and wrote the immortal poem "Crossing the Lingding Ocean" on the way. The following year, he went to Dadu (today's Beijing) and was imprisoned for four years. He was tortured but refused to surrender and was eventually martyred at Chaishikou. The "Song of Righteousness" composed in prison was especially recited by later generations.
