The agents of Zhongtong and Scout posted slogans everywhere, spreading rumors that NLD was "colluding" with Zhongtong, trying to seize power by using local forces, and that Li Gongpu came to Kunming with the huge sum provided by Zhongtong to plan riots. In order to expose the conspiracy of reactionaries and explain the truth to the public, NLD branch held a press conference in Kunming. The leaders of NLD have repeatedly stated that NLD is a non-violent revolutionary group and strives for democracy only through peaceful means. NLD is firmly opposed to assassination and violence. After the conspiracy of reactionaries was exposed, Li Gongpu and others were slandered and threatened. Li Gongpu didn't take it to heart. He has risked his life for the cause of peace and democracy in China. At a rally, Li Gongpu said, "Do you want to threaten me with death? People are not afraid of death, why are they afraid of death? I stepped out of the door today, so I'm not going to step back. "
1946 at the end of June, the NLD and people from all walks of life launched a 10,000-person signature campaign in Kunming, demanding peace. Although the Democratic Alliance has repeatedly claimed that it is not a violent group, it only strives for democracy by peaceful means and opposes assassination and riots. However, the Nanjing National Government secretly ordered the Kunming garrison headquarters, theNo. 13 Military Police Corps and other organs: "China * * * deliberately rebelled, and NLD willingly followed the chaos. In this emergency, these traitors should be dealt with appropriately when necessary. " After receiving the order, Kunming police chief Huo Yizhang drew up a list of the leaders who arrested and assassinated NLD. Li Gongpu ranked first and Wen Yiduo ranked second. On the evening of July 6th, Mr. and Mrs. Li Gongpu were assassinated by Kuomintang agents in Daxing Slope of Qingyun Street on their way home.
