Ask for advice★Masters★History of the Three Kingdoms: Zhuge Liang’s ancestral home and settlement

Zhuge Liang’s ancestral home was Langya Yangdu, which is now south of Yishui County, Shandong Province. He later moved to Nanyang with his father.

There are two versions of his former residence: Nanyang and Xiangyang. Regarding these two theories, I found some information, excerpted as follows:

One said that his former residence was in Nanyang, Henan Province today. On March 19, 1957, "Guangming Daily" published a photo of "Liu Bei visiting the thatched cottage three times" taken by a Xinhua News Agency reporter, and gave the following explanation: "At the Zhuge Liang historic site in Wollongong, the western suburb of Nanyang, Henan Province, it is said that Liu Bei visited the thatched cottage three times. Zhuge Liang is in this place." Someone once quoted Zhuge Liang's autobiography in "Chu Shi Biao" and the records in "Three Kingdoms" to confirm. Because Zhuge Liang said in "Chu Shi Biao": "I am a commoner, working hard in Nanyang... The late emperor did not think that his ministers were despicable, and he was in vain, and he paid three respects to his ministers in their thatched cottages."; "Three Kingdoms". "The Biography of Zhuge Liang" also says: "Liang was orphaned early, and his father served as the prefect of Yuzhang appointed by Yuan Shu... He met the Han Dynasty and elected Zhu Hao to replace Xuan. Xuansu had an old relationship with Liu Biao, the pastor of Jingzhou, and relied on him." Judging from the records, it may be that after Zhu Hao replaced Zhuge Xuan, Zhuge Liang's father's brother, Zhuge Xuan went to Yijingzhou to herd Liu Biao, while Zhuge Liang stayed in Henan to "work in Nanyang". In this way, Liu Bei's three visits to the thatched cottage were undoubtedly in Nanyang, Henan. In other words, Zhuge Liang's former residence should be in Nanyang, Henan. In the Collection of Ancient and Modern Books compiled by Fang Yu, there is a poem by Ye Bingjing, a poet of the Ming Dynasty: "The hills are dark and the pillows are flat, and the shadows of the trees are sparse and the moon is lonely. The land is occupied by thieves and ministers peek at the nine tripods, and the elders of the sky are standing in the three capitals. Go out. The house rectified the affairs of the ages, and clamped the slaves of the two countries with the snap of a finger. Therefore, the four poles of the Ao were cut off, so the Red Emperor cared for the great power." Regardless of the title, people will know that it is a tribute to Zhuge Liang as long as they read the word "out of the house". , and if you see the title, you will understand one thing, that is, Ye Bingjing believes that Zhuge Liang's thatched cottage is in Nanyang, Henan, because the title of this poem is "Wollongong".

Wang Zun, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, once wrote a quatrain in "Nanyang", praising Liu Bei for not being ashamed to look down on others and selecting virtuous people. The whole poem is: "The land is trapped in mud and the grasshoppers are not adapted to it. How can the crops be hidden in the high ground? If the Lord hadn't looked down three times, who would have recognized the thatched cottage and the sleeping dragon." Although the author did not explain where the Nanyang he mentioned belongs to, but from The word "Wolong" in the last sentence can be inferred that he is talking about Nanyang, Henan.

Some people object that Zhuge Liang's former residence is in Nanyang, Henan, and believe that Zhuge Liang's former residence should be in Longzhong Mountain, 30 miles west of Xiangyang City, Hubei, more than 200 miles away from Nanyang, Henan. The reasons are as follows: "Nanyang" was the name of a county in the Han Dynasty, which governed more than 20 counties, while today's Nanyang in Henan Province was "Wan" in the Han Dynasty. Nanyang County, Nan County, and Xiangyang County were under the jurisdiction of the Jingzhou Governor's Department in the Han Dynasty. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Liu Biao was appointed governor. At this time, the Eastern Han Dynasty's regime had been shaken. Since Liu Biao was supported by the large landowners in Jianghan area, he occupied Nanjun and Xiangyang County during the melee between the landlords and warlords, and was stationed in Xiangyang, but he did not completely occupy Nanyang County. At this time, Wancheng was occupied by Yuan Shu. After Yuan Shudong left, it was occupied by Zhang Ji and Zhang Xiu. In the second year of Jian'an, Zhang Xiu surrendered to Cao Cao, and Wancheng became Cao Cao's sphere of influence. Liu Bei followed Liu Biao in the sixth year of Jian'an, so his three visits to the thatched cottage should naturally be after the sixth year of Jian'an. But by then Liu Bei and Cao Cao were face-to-face enemies, and Wancheng had become an enemy territory for Liu Bei; but he It is unreasonable to be able to freely enter and exit the outskirts of enemy territory and look around calmly. This is one.

Based on the "Three Kingdoms". "The Biography of Zhuge Liang", Yuzhang was Yuan Shu's sphere of influence. During Yuan Shu's lifetime, the Eastern Han Dynasty court could not send officials to his sphere of influence. Yuan Shu died in the fourth year of Jian'an. Zhu Hao replaced Zhuge Xuan and Zhuge Xuan relied on Liu Biao. Of course, it was after the fourth year of Jian'an. At this time, Liu Biao was stationed in Xiangyang, and his sphere of influence did not reach Wancheng, so the people who relied on him were not I will live in Wancheng, which is more than 200 miles away from Xiangyang.

This is two.

The "Han, Jin, Spring and Autumn Annals" records: "(Zhuge) Liang's family was in Deng County, Nanyang, twenty miles west of Xiangyang City, named Longzhong." The Deng County here is not the Deng County in Henan today. County, because it is more than 100 miles north of Xiangyang, and the ruins of the ancient city of Deng County are more than 10 miles north of the Han River near Xiangyang.

Although Liu Biao did not completely occupy Nanyang County at that time, his sphere of influence had extended to the Bowang and Xinye areas of Nanyang County. Deng County was further to the south, close to Xiangyang, and was within Liu Biao's sphere of influence. Zhuge Liang and his father Yi Liu Biao must have lived here. Therefore, Zhuge Liang's former residence should be in Longzhong Mountain in Xiangyang. It can be said that these two theories have their own reasons, but they also have deviations. The deviation of the first theory is that it does not take into account the records in "Han, Jin, Spring and Autumn"; while the second theory ignores Wollongong, a place closely related to Zhuge Liang. Also, "Three Kingdoms" does not clearly record whether Zhuge Liang and Zhuge Xuan followed Liu Biao.

So the truth can only be guessed. Because of this, everyone holds their own opinions and debates endlessly. Where is Zhuge Liang's former residence, the thatched cottage where Liu Bei visited three times? It is still difficult to determine until now, and it is still a mystery that needs to continue to find out the details.

Nanyang had an important transportation geographical position in the Han Dynasty. Nanyang and the transportation structure with Nanyang as the hub once played a special historical role. When investigating the history of transportation in the Han Dynasty and the history of regional culture in the Han Dynasty, we must pay attention to Nanyang’s transportation geography. Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, Nanyang's status has become more prominent. With the rise of the wave of immigrants from the south, Nanyang's status as a hub of four links and a transportation center connecting the north and the south has become increasingly prominent. Zhuge Liang chose Nanyang as his residence to observe the world, analyze the situation, and wait for the opportunity. He obviously noticed the advantages of Nanyang in concentrating and communicating information from all directions, which reflected the strategic vision of an extraordinary politician and military strategist.
