Youyang was named after Youyang Creek. Youyang Town, also known as Youyangdong, was established in the Tang Dynasty and was under the jurisdiction of Xianyou County. Surrounded by high mountains and dangerous terrain, it has always been a battleground for military strategists. It is the choke point for transportation to Yongtai and Putian. In the third year of the Taiping and Xing Dynasty of the Song Dynasty (978), Lin Juyi, a foreigner, gathered more than 10,000 people to revolt against the Song Dynasty. The Song court sent officers and soldiers to suppress it, and the later Juyi people asked to surrender. The following year, Xinghua County and Xinghua Army were established, and both the county and military administration were located in Youyang Town. In the 13th year of Ming Zhengtong (1448), Xinghua County was abolished, and Youyang was placed under Xianyou County, which belonged to Xingtaili until the Qing Dynasty. In the Republic of China, it belonged to Guyi Township. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it belonged to the ninth, tenth and Youyang districts. In April 1955, Zhaiqian Village (32 households) in Tongguan Township, Yongtai County was included in Youyang District. In September 1958, it belonged to Maixie Commune. At the end of 1961, Youyang Commune was established. In December 1984, it was renamed Youyang Township. In November 1992, it was changed to Youyang Town. Within the territory, there are places of interest such as Longchuan City, an ancient castle in the Han Dynasty, Huizheng Bridge in the Southern Song Dynasty, Jiangjun City, Guzhai Ridge, and Xingshan Academy. It has produced celebrities such as Jin Li, Shi Bin, Zhan Wanzhong, and Bai Jin.
