The production process of oil painting is a creative process in which artists consciously and skillfully master oil painting materials, choose and apply techniques that can express artistic ideas and form artistic images. The following are the matters needing attention in color matching of oil painting pigments that I have sorted out. Let's have a look!
Common tools:
A thick glass or marble plate, a grinding hammer (grinding rod), a palette knife and a glass bottle or empty tin tube are used to store pigments.
Specific methods:
1. Pour the pigment powder on the glass plate. If it is a pigment block, it should be ground into powder first, and then linseed oil should be added slowly.
2. At the same time, round grinding is carried out and blended with a palette knife until the unique consistency of oil painting pigment is obtained.
Must be carefully ground to eliminate particles, so that pigment powder and linseed oil can be fully and perfectly combined.
Matters needing attention in grinding oil painting pigments:
1. Different pigment powders need different amounts of oil. Just grind the pigment powder into paste.
2. Try to put more toner and less oil.
Generally, raw linseed oil is used to color powder. Slow drying and easy to use for a long time.
If painting needs quick drying, you can add 1: 2 Dama oil 10% to the pigment powder.
Please pay attention to the following points when modulating colors:
1. Only white (especially zinc white) cannot be mixed with pure oil, and all other pigment powders can be prepared with raw linseed oil.
2. White powder will change color soon after being mixed with pure oil, and it is best to prepare it with emulsion. Cellulose and casein emulsion binders can be selected. This kind of emulsion dries quickly, so the prepared color must be sealed and taken as much as possible.
3. For coarse pigment, it can be ground into fine particles while blending oil.
4. For the color of the oil painting in the lead pipe, oil absorption treatment can be carried out before painting (such as squeezing in the newspaper to make the paper absorb the oil in the pigment), and the oily medium can be adjusted with time.
5. For light-colored pigments with strong chroma, appropriate additives, such as talcum powder and Gao Cen soil, are needed.
For opaque colors with strong hiding power, a proper amount of talcum powder can also be added. Gao Cen clay can only increase its volume without changing the pigment, which can weaken the intensity of light color or change opaque color into transparent color.
6. For the pigment powder floating in water or oil, a little bovine bile or alcohol can be added to make the pigment powder adhesive.
7. Permeable pigment should not be ground too finely, otherwise it will change color.
8. When grinding toxic pigments such as lead, prevent the powder from entering the nose.
9. The pigment developed with linseed oil can only be coated with a covering layer when the underlying pigment is completely dry, so it must not be coated with extremely thick paint, which is most suitable for one-time coating and monochrome coating.
To change the shortcomings of this pure oily pigment, it is necessary to add 10% resin varnish and 2% wax dissolved in turpentine to linseed oil.
Wax is added to increase the viscosity of pigment (if poppy oil is used, wax is not needed), and at the same time, it can not only reduce the yellowing of linseed oil, but also prevent heavy pigment from separating from oil.
10. Some grinded pigments may harden after being stored for a few days and need further grinding.
