Panda is recognized as the national treasure of China in the world, and its image is friendly, lovely and naive. The ice pier is designed based on the panda, which combines the panda image with the ice crystal shell, reflecting the characteristics of ice and snow movement in winter. Panda was once the mascot of 1990 Beijing Asian Games and one of the five mascot families of Fuwa in Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and this time it became the mascot of 2022 Winter Olympics, symbolizing Beijing's transition from the Asian Games to the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Design elements of ice pier
The head of the ice pier is decorated with colorful halo, inspired by the ice ribbon of the National Speed Skating Hall of Beijing Winter Olympics. The flowing colored lines symbolize the ice and snow sports and the 5G high-tech track, which means the combination of modern technology and ice and snow sports. The red heart pattern in the palm of the left hand represents the warm welcome of the host country, China, to people all over the world. At the same time, the ice pier reduces the traditional elements and is full of futuristic, contemporary and speed sense.
Bing Dundun's design team specially went to the Sichuan giant panda habitat, inspected the shape and posture of the panda on the spot, and positioned Bing Dundun as a cub panda. Just like the characteristics of panda cubs, Bing Dundun has some characters when standing, and a peach heart in his little hand. These elements are all shown in the image of the ice shield. According to the regulations of the International Olympic Committee, mascots can't have gender differences, so the ice shield is neutral, and it doesn't make a sound, but only transmits information through body movements.
