Born in Cleveland, he studied at Harvard University and Yale University, studied in France and Germany successively, and obtained a doctorate. After finishing his studies, he taught in California and Yale University, and now he is a professor at Duke University, head of the Department of Literature and director of the Center for Critical Theory. Jameson majored in French literature when he was a doctor. Because he studied in France and Germany successively, he was able to read a lot of French theory and German philosophy works from the original text, which broadened his horizons and ideas. His doctoral thesis Sartre: The Origin of a Style (196 1) showed his broad thinking and profound theoretical foundation from the beginning. Then, under the guidance of Hegel and Marx's dialectics and historical view, using Frye's cultural viewpoint and French structuralism, he wrote Marxism and Form (197 1), which combined the composition of form with the internal logic of literature and gave form concrete content-the paradigm of an era and the cultural spirit of an era-logic. In the book The Cage of Language (1972), he thinks that this book is only an explanation of structuralism, which has lost its due theoretical value compared with Marxism and form (197 1). Along the road of dialectical thinking, Jameson combined psychoanalysis with post-structuralism, further improved his thoughts, and wrote "Political Unconsciousness" (198 1), which established his position in the critical theoretical circle and had a great influence in the literary theoretical circle, and has been widely quoted so far. After that, he wrote Ideology of Theory (1988) and Late Marxism (1990). With the development of capitalism, great changes have taken place in the mode of production, and the so-called post-industrial era has emerged. As a critic with a big picture, Jameson, after nearly ten years of painstaking research and observation, turned from literary research to cultural research, and wrote a masterpiece, Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism (1990) (this work is an extension and development of his article of the same name published in the New Left Review in 1984). However, the formation of his thoughts began with his speech "Postmodernism and Consumer Society" at the Whitney Museum in the autumn of 1982. Through dialectical analysis of mass media and mass cultural products such as literature, painting, architecture, music and movies, he convincingly expounded the internal relationship between production mode and culture and ideology, and the relationship between historical consciousness and temporal and spatial changes.
Since 1980s, Jameson's works and academic activities have exerted considerable influence on the world. Jameson wrote a lot, many of which have been translated into many languages. Marxism and Form (197 1), The Cage of Language (1972), Political Unconsciousness (198 1), Seeds of Time (/kloc-0). Other works include Ideology of Theory (1988), Cultural Logic of Postmodernism or Late Capitalism (1990), Visible Signature (1990) and so on.
