Yu Wenyong, born in Tongzhou in the 9th year of the Western Wei Dynasty (543), is the fourth son of Yu Wentai, the powerful minister of the Western Wei Dynasty and the founder of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, and the younger brother of Emperor Xiaozong of the Northern Zhou Dynasty and Yuwen Yu of Ming Di in the Northern Zhou Dynasty. His mother is the Empress Dowager.
