William III, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, father of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. The eldest son of King Wilhelm II. In 1839, he married Matilda Zoffe, the daughter of King William I of Württemberg, and they had three children. Successed to the throne in 1849. He opposed many restrictions on royal power in the 1848 Constitution, so he took great pains in governing, but still appointed John Tolbeck, the framer of the constitution, to lead the new representative government.
