Simplicity is the main reason for the success of SNMP standard. Because in the complex network composed of large-scale and multi-vendor products, it is very important to define the management protocol, but at the same time it is also the defect of SNMP-in order to make the protocol simple and easy, SNMP simplifies many functions, such as:
There is no batch access mechanism, and the efficiency of accessing large blocks of data is low;
The security mechanism provided is insufficient and the security is poor;
It only runs on TCP/IP protocol and does not support other network protocols;
There is no communication mechanism between managers, which is only suitable for centralized management and not conducive to distributed management;
Only suitable for monitoring network equipment, not suitable for monitoring the network itself.
In view of these problems, its improvement has been going on. At the beginning of 1993, SNMPVersion2 is introduced, namely SNMP v2 (after the introduction of SNMP v2(SNMP v2 called SNMPv 1). SNM-Pv2 contains all the previous improvements to SNMP. In addition to keeping SNMP clear and easy to implement, it also has stronger functions and better security, as shown below:
It provides verification mechanism, encryption mechanism, time synchronization mechanism and so on. And the safety is greatly improved.
It provides the ability to retrieve a large amount of data at one time, and the efficiency is greatly improved;
The information exchange mechanism between managers is added to support the distributed management structure. The task of the main manager is shared by the intermediate manager, which increases the local autonomy of the remote site.
It can run on OSI, Appletalk, IPX and other network protocols, and is suitable for multi-protocol network environment (but its default network protocol is still UDP).
According to StevenWaldbusser's test results of Carnegie-Merlin University (one of the makers of SNMPv2 standard), the processing capacity of SNMPv2 is obviously stronger than that of SNMPv 1, which is about five times that of SNMPv 1.
SNMPv2 * * * is composed of 12 protocol text (RFC1441-RFC1452), which has been published as the recommended standard of the Internet.
As you can see, it supports distributed management. Some websites can act as managers and agents at the same time, and play both roles at the same time. As agents, they accept request commands from higher management stations, some of which are related to the local data of agents, so they can reply directly. The other part is related to the data on the remote agent. At this point, the agent requests data from the remote agent as the manager, and then sends a reply to a higher management station. In the latter case, they act as agents.
