On the afternoon of June 8th, 200012000, a publicity activity called "Recovering the Lost Handkerchiefs" was held in New Century Square, Nanjing East Road. Nanjing road tourist signature: from the perspective of environmental protection, use less paper towels and use more handkerchiefs.
According to statistics, China now consumes less than one handkerchief per 10 population every year, and it is replaced by a large number of disposable paper towels. Experts point out that although paper towels are convenient to use, they have three major disadvantages:
★ First, it consumes a lot of wood. To produce 1 ton paper, it is necessary to cut down 17 ten-year-old trees, and the result of excessive consumption of paper is ecological destruction;
★ Second, environmental pollution. Disposable paper towels will produce a lot of rubbish. Wastewater discharge during pulp production is the main pollution source of water environment, accounting for more than 30% of urban pollution;
★ Third, some paper towels contain fluorescent whitening agents, chlorine and other compounds harmful to health. Strong poisons produced by chemical reactions in the production process can lead to liver cancer.
Shanghai Consumers Association and Shanghai Environmental Protection Publicity and Education Center jointly organized this activity, hoping that consumers would use more handkerchiefs, reduce the use of disposable towels and protect the environment.
