Introduction: On April 22, 1970, a citizen environmental movement broke out in the United States with 20 million people participating. This day was named Earth Day. As the beginning of mankind's modern environmental movement, it promoted the establishment of environmental laws and regulations in Western countries, and contributed to the convening of the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. Since then, government environmental protection departments and private environmental organizations in various countries have been established, and Earth Day has also It has become the most common environmental protection anniversary in more than 140 countries.
April 22, 2000 is the 30th Earth Day in the world and the first Earth Day in the new century. 146 countries will hold global environmental protection activities for this purpose. On October 18, 1999, Mr. Mark was commissioned by the "Earth Day International" organization and the organization's leader - Earth Day initiator Dennis Hayes, and organized by the US-China Environmental Foundation to hold an Earth Day symposium in Beijing. Global Village Beijing, the World Wildlife Fund, the Institute of Environment and Development, and some universities in Beijing who attended the meeting decided to jointly organize a unified Earth Day event with the theme of sustainable consumption.
On November 10, Beijing Global Village, China Youth Development Foundation, China Association for the Promotion of International Non-Governmental Organizations, World Wildlife Fund, and the Institute of Environment and Development held a meeting at the Beijing Global Village office and decided to serve as *** Work with the sponsoring units to establish the "2000 Earth Day China" joint meeting and jointly organize Earth Day activities. April 22, 2005 is the 36th "World Earth Day". Recently, the Ministry of Land and Resources has determined that the theme of this year's "World Earth Day" is "Treat the Earth Well - Scientific Development, Building Harmony." At that time, the basic knowledge of land resources, basic national conditions, as well as national policies and popular science knowledge on the protection, economical utilization, intensive use of land resources, and the realization of harmonious coexistence between man and nature will be carried out to the public around the theme. The main points of the propaganda are to implement the scientific concept of development that is people-oriented, comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable; to be kind to the earth and promote the harmony between man and nature; to understand the basic national conditions of our country’s large population, relatively insufficient resources and weak ecological environment carrying capacity, and to strengthen resource conservation and protection Awareness of ecology and resource recycling, building a resource-saving and environment-friendly society; relying on scientific and technological innovation and progress, promoting rational development, economical utilization and intensive utilization of resources, promoting environmental protection and governance, and improving the economic and social sustainability of land and resources. Development support capabilities.
The Earth Day event originated in the United States. In 1969, U.S. Democratic Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed holding lectures on environmental issues on university campuses across the country and setting April 22 of the following year as "Earth Day." Dennis Hayes, a 25-year-old Harvard Law School student at the time, quickly turned Nelson's proposal into a concrete idea for large-scale community activities across the United States, and received widespread support from many young students. On April 22, 1970, the United States held the massive "Earth Day" event for the first time, which was the first large-scale mass environmental protection movement in human history.
As the beginning of mankind’s modern environmental movement, the “Earth Day” event promoted the establishment of environmental regulations in many countries. On April 22, 1990, more than 200 million people in more than 140 countries around the world held various environmental protection publicity activities at the same time. This activity has been endorsed by the United Nations. From then on "Earth Day" became "World Earth Day".
The earth is the common home of mankind. However, with the development of science and technology and the expansion of economic scale, the global environmental situation has continued to deteriorate in the past 30 years. Data show that since the beginning of meteorological instrument observation records in 1860, the global annual average temperature has increased by 0.6 degrees Celsius, and the 13 warmest years have all occurred since 1983. In the 1980s, the average number of people affected by disasters each year worldwide was 147 million, and by the 1990s, this number rose to 211 million. Currently, about 40% of the world's population is seriously short of water. If this trend is not curbed, more than 55% of the world's population will face water shortages within 30 years. The deterioration of the natural environment also seriously threatens wild species on the earth. Today, 12% of the world's birds and a quarter of all mammals are endangered, while overfishing has led to the depletion of one-third of fish stocks.
The World Earth Day activities aim to arouse human beings’ awareness of caring for the earth and protecting their homeland, and promote the coordinated development of resource development and environmental protection. China has held Earth Day events on April 22 every year since the 1990s.
There is no internationally unified specific theme for Earth Day every year. Its overall theme is always "There is only one Earth".
